I've decided to look at the Samsung LCD range. Although the Panasonic has had great reviews, i've spoken to several perople who have had very poor experiences of both the 37LZD70 and LZD80, due to problems with uneven backlighting, and have had to have several sets returned. This is a real shame as i like the LZD80, and was going to buy, but this has put me off (as well as numerous posts on these forums)

I know the arguments for plasma, but i want a full HD set and the 42 plasmas are just too big, and start to get outside my budget.

So, i decided on the basis of the review for the LE40A656 to take a look at the samsung, specifically the LE37A656. What i would like to know is whether this TV is worth the premium over the 5 series full HD models. I can get the LE37A558 from Amazon for £730. The 6 series is approx £300 more, and does look stunning, but is it worth the difference. Apart from better sound and 1 more HDMI i cant decide what the differences are?

Comments and help would be appreciated.

pretty sure you'd struggle to notice the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 37" anyway and panny do a hd ready plasma 37px70 i think theyre going to bring out a new plasma to replace it maybe one of the whf crew could maybe find out roughly when this would be and if its 1080 or hd ready, might be worth the wait if its not to far off?

the Samsung LE40A656 is a great set that has had some very good reviews... but i dont believe it is any better than Panasnoinc TH37PX80B Plasma... yes its "only HD Ready" but it will downscale from 1080 to 720 lines, also there is not much of a significant different betwenn Full HD pictures and HD Ready pictures on TVs of this size..

also just to add its already out and has been for a few weeks maybe a month or two ^_^

Would agree and i have nearly brought the PX80 on a couple of occaisions now as it is a lovely set, but the main consideration for going full HD is that i'm going to be sitting close to the screen, approx 2m (small room), so i figured i would see the extra detail, especially in gaming, as lots of xbox360 stuff is 1080p nowadays.

What do you think?

Go for the Pana, I just bought one and I only sit about 2 m from the screen and it looks fantastic epseically if you are watching SD pictures. I haven't tried it with my Xbox 360 as I am using it with my 26" Samsung for that but what I have read it should handle it very nicely.
Also I have seen the PX80 next to a Pana with them both running Full HD and you would hardly tell the difference so don't get hung up with it not being future proof.

Most Xbox 360 stuff is 1080p because the Xbox is actually upscaling it to 1080p. The true resolution of virtually all mainstream games is 720p (at the moment anyway).

In case it makes it any easier for you to decide, Komplett.co.uk have the LE37A656 at £850 and Costco sell the LE40A656 at £904. I've been trying to find a better price for the 37 myself, but the prices differ wildly depending on where you go. Maybe best to let the prices settle for a few weeks before buying?
