Focal 716

Hi every body
I have seen 2 model of Focal 716, s and v. The appearance are alittle different. Is there any difference in term of sound quality?
I can buy a new pair of 716v for 1000$
A pair of second hand 716s for 600$

If memory serves me righ the early 716 were known as Focal-JM Lab. JM is the initials of the founder Jacques Mahaul, but later models dropped the JM-Lab and just marketed the product as Focal.

Really depends how old these particular 716 are. The 'V' version was an upgrade to the original Focal- JM Lab, so, in theory, the 'V's should yield better sound quality.

I can't answer your question per se, but would ask if you are familiar with the Focal sound? They are a brand that divides opinion, as they have an upfront, lively, but forward sound, that some (including me), find wearing. There are of course, many who love this presentation.

They somewhat toned down their normal sonic signature, with the Aria range.

Personally, I think they need carefully matched..which means avoiding components with a similar trait. They go well with brands like Arcam, Sugden, Audio Analogue, Pathos and Electrocompaniet....so what would you be pairing them with?

Very good point, i have not heard focal sound yet. My partening amp is onkyo 9030.

I can only give you my preferences:

I don't really like Focal or MA...so my preference would be Kef....probably the R100s, as they would be less revealing...but the LS50s could still be worth trying.

Hi. MA's Silver range is said to be quite smoother sounding then most MA speakers, and I know for a fact that Focal Aria range is the same (as opposed to their Chorus range). If the Onkyo is forward and bright-ish, I would steer clear off Chorus, but Aria is superior in every way, big sounding, dynamic and smooth. Kef R series might also be an option, but I found them to be pretty bland-sounding (either that, or my amp back then - Rotel RA1520 - wasn't up to the task of driving them, or matched them poorly)
