Hi, this is my first post so I hope this question hasn't been covered already.

We are about to move house to accomodate our growing 3-yr-old boy. The new place will have a large-ish (20' x 30') living room. My current speakers are Mordaunt-Short MS-3.30s I've had for 20 years. The Krell I bought to replace an old Rotel RA-870BX that I've had for as long as the speakers, and I bought the Esoteric a couple of years ago as a dealer ex-demo model. My main source for the Rotel/MS combination was vinyl, as I was a DJ while at university and chose the sound to suit the music (lots of house/techno) that I listened to back then. These days its more varied, with pop and classical thrown in.

My question arises because when we move, the wife wants floorstanders as she thinks this will be safer in a larger room with son and other kids running about (not an issue at present where the speakers are out of the way). I auditioned the Dali Helicon 400 a while back when I bought the DV-50s and liked the sound but they may be too big for the wife's tastes.

Any thoughts appreciated. I should add that I live in Japan so product selection may be an issue, but I have seen Monitor Audio, Kef, B&W in the shops here, and don't mind 2nd-hand. Thanks!

Can you get ATC in Japan?
I just bought ATC scm19's for use with my Krell Kav300i and its a briliant match. You should listen to the scm40 floorstanders which are supposed to be even better.
You could ship them from Australia if you can't buy in Japan but you wouldn't be able to audition if that was the case.

Ive previously owned a Krell Kav300iL and had B&W N803's with that, followed by PMC IB1's.
The B&W's i didnt like except for very good midrange dynamic ability. But its a matter of taste to what you like.
The PMC's were stunning and could move serious air even in a large room but need a Krell power amp like an FPB200 to really shine. I sold the 300iL and used an Arcam A22 as a pre amp and bought an FPB200. Ive since sold all my old system except my cd player that i still use.

I will however be looking for an FPB200 again in the future.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know ATC or PCM very well but the SCM 20 and SCM 50 , and PCM's FB/GB/OB/TB are all available on a local auction site. I'll look out for them new, too.

The scm20 are very similar to the 19's i have but may be too small for that large room.
The scm50's are supposed to be amazing though.

Ive owned PMC DB1i's too and i feel that PMC's are only good if you buy from the EB1(Replacement to the IB1) upwards. All the models you listed are below the EB1 and i feel use cheap drive units.
All the ATC's have bomb proof build, even the cheaper models and have far better resolution than the PMC's for the money.

I used to do a bit of DJing myself and like Techno, house and trance etc.
I listen to all sorts of stuff now including drum and bass. Nothing does drum and bass better than the large PMC's, but my scm19's are amazingly capable for their size.

I had a chance to listen to the SCM40 today - just a brief one during lunch hour. They sounded very, very nice, although I didn't know the test disc at all. Immediately after, I saw them again in a shop holding a closing down sale, but even they were asking JPY378,000 or 2,700 of your English pounds. Ouch!
