I'm Arcam's biggest fan but for the type of music you listen to then Arcam is not the right brand, especially the more budget range like the A65+. Arcam's strengths lie in detail, warmth and they can be very unforgiving of rock music.

The NAD brand are looking popular, I dont really know much about them but a 5 star on here has to be good. I like the high power rating as that should compliment my speakers nicely. Any other ideas welcomed, thanks!!----------------------

Guysock,

I have the little brother version of this amp, which is a Technics SUA900 Mk 2, item number on ebay is 270404182957. I am not connected to the seller in any way. I think that for the kind of high impact music you like it could be the very thing, as I find my amp fairly upfront and bold. It's just an idea, and I know some people consider the mainstream Japanese brands to be "not hi fi" but I thought I would share my thought.

Hi Guysock, not allowed to sell directly on here unfortunately. If you're interested in the amp we can have an email chat, if you have found my amp then cool, if not, I'm sure one of the Mods can sort out the email linkup if we ask nicely!

One other thing: I'd prefer not to have to box this up as it weighs a ton (seriously - an easy 12-15kgs) so unless you're near, or within reasonable travelling distance of Edinburgh you can either pick up, or I can deliver for petrol cost up 90 mins drive away, but otherwise it makes it a bit tricky!

For half your budget, in as new condition, Denon PMA355UK. Clear, controlled and rythmic with good bass and an allegedly very decent phono stage. Remote control, separate pre-amp section.

http://www.denon.co.uk/site/frames_main.php?main=prod&ver=&MID=3&sub=2&action=detail&Pid=197&

I've heard most amplifiers under a grand and many above. The little Denon sounds very similar to Arcams A28 (through a variety of speakers) but has more attack. Just recently I had it side by side with Naim's XS. It lost out on both drive, weight and sounded slightly dynamically restrained. Hardly surprising but it held up quite well. The flipside is that it sounded clearer and with better treble. Sure, I'd choose the Naim but switching back was'nt disappointing in the least, not something I could say about many other products, Arcam's new upper range integrateds included if I'd pay full retail.
