Finally! A proper 11.2 channel AV receiver with Atmos and DTS:X from Anthem!!

Anthem has recently announced MRX 1120 in Hong Kong.

This is exactly what I want!! Quite pricey though ($3850, so around £3500). Need to start saving up!!! *biggrin*

Details are a bit sketchy. This is what I've found so far:

I've just added the full home cinema experience. I have installed a middle aged man in front of me moving his head at the opportune moment. My wife sits next to me munching noisy crisps during the quiet moments. Meanwhile the couple on the other side of the settee keep shuffling past to go to the toilets and fetch some popcorn. Finally I have installed a few teenagers to giiggle in the back of the room. ('Get your hand out of my knickers .... not you, the other guy!')

Just like the real thing!

Exceptionally promising. I'm hoping Arcam will release new AVR's with Atmos/Auto in addition to HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2.

I take it you will be upgrading to it from your current Marantz, Bigboss?

I'm looking to reduce the box count. Anthem will no doubt be superior to Marantz. I hope they price it sensibly though.

Now all you need to add is twenty to forty years' worth of coke / ice cream / popcorn stickiness to your seats and carpets, maybe an odd-looking bloke in a dirty raincoat,.....

I'm beginning to wonder when too many speakers will be, erm, too many.

If you're a regular first team starter for Manchester United and have a media room the size of a tennis court (and presumably a brainer-than-you butler to work all the electronics for you), going much beyond 7.1 or 7.2 is going to pay diminishing returns, IMHO.

My media room, which I reckon is about 24 feet x 15 feet, is equipped with 7.1, and I will be adding a second subwoofer (Polk PSW110 - I got one half price refurbished from the factory and am going to add another for "balance"). I may go to 9.2, or 7.2.2 if you prefer, if / when I manage to get a "proper stereo" again, but then I'll be using the "proper stereo" speakers as the fronts and the in-wall (high up) fronts currently in the surround sound system as "front highs" or "front wides".

I don't think 'er indoors would allow me to add another pair of in-walls half-way down the room when I've already got a pair of "middles" in the ceiling.

No doubt in 10 year's time we'll see Dolby Atmos 15 coming out with in-floor, in-ceiling, and whole wall panel speakers, but until then....

Details now available on Anthem website.

Looks amazing! It's smaller than my Marantz SR7009, so will fit the rack well. Will have to start saving up for Christmas purchase. :)

If I read the specs correctly, only the 1st 5 channels have the full 140w each with remaining 6 being just 60 w, which is fine for height channels, but not ideal having different power outputs in the 7 main channels.

Bill

The rear surrounds are only "presence" speakers, so 60w will be fine. At the moment, 2 out of my 4 ceiling speakers are powered by Marantz PM6005 and it integrates fine with the rest of my system.

Let's see what the reviews say.

The inclusion of DTS PlayFi in Anthem's 2016 receivers is interesting. Being a Tidal user, I'm always interested in new brands that include Tidal and it seems DTS PlayFi is one of them. Whether DTS PlayFi will actually catch on beyond Anthem, Paradigm, Polk and a few other brands I've never heard of before remains to be seen.

Features-wise, Anthem certainly seems to have closed the gap with their big-name Japanese rivals this release, but US pricing does indicate a fair hike this year. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent to the MRX510, which last year was a 7.1 amp at £1700. This year's MRX520 is a 5.1 amp only, with the MRX720 a 7.1 amp with up to 11.2 in pre-amp mode. The MRX510 was quite a good balance between price, features and performance, but its only real equivalent this year is the MRX720 which is a lot pricier.
