All the models you mention are good. Is there any possibility you can demo any of them at a local dealer? If not, I like the Dali's, very nearly got them myself (foiled by a stock problem) and that is a very good price for them - however it might be useful to know your room size and some music preferences?

Have a look at this month Hi Fi Choice, they have what you need...

They have a "Power Tower" group test with:

Boston Acoustics A250

Dali Zensor 5

Mission MX-4

Monitor Audio BX 5

Q Acoustics 2050i

Tannoy Mercury V4

And the winner is...

I dont know if anything has changed but I used to think Rega's original R3 are the only cheap floorstander I would have considered but the new model is substantially more expensive. For £400 I'd be inclined to got the bookshelf way, especially with an amplifier of relatively low power. - If volume is your main consideration a more efficient floorstander will probably do the job but you will more likely than not sacrifice in other areas.

This blonde is not dumb ...

My first ones cost £399 new. Rega R3s original price at launch was £487 and that was around 2005. So they were never exactly 'cheap'.

My second (and current) pair were £220 (used, mint, boxed, maple finish) about 18 months ago.

Rega RS3s are £778 now. Given the improvements (and the seven years that have elapsed since the R3s were first made) that's not too bad.

Rega tend to set a price at launch and stick to it over the years of the product's life. So RS3s are better value now than when they were originally launched a few years ago.

Hi drummerman,

Agree that R3's are very good but OP would have to find a second-hand pair for her budget. Otherwise I think the clue is in 'i want floor standing speakers , and have narrowed it down to these choices'

Going the standmount route is probably only going to confuse a 'dumb-blonde' :)

you said it, i would consider stand mounts as long as i get good bass and a clear treble , and yes the other blonde is not dumb and yes is pretty

If you can stand the colours then the RS3 might be doable just about on budget: http://www.moorgateacoustics.co.uk/used-and-x-demo-equipment/rega-rs3-speakers-2083917-169901-824798.php

Slightly outside budget, but if I was buying a budget floorstander, I'd save a little extra and go for the Tannoy DC6T, which at their current price of £549 are a steal - great sounding speaker, and with a real wood veneer to boot. They're a decent sensitivity (89dB) and are rated at 8ohms, so a good quality budget amp like the 6004 will drive them fine.

You've here an excellent starting point, read the article and take your conclusions.

Next step, demo the ones you think are suiteble to your space, budget etc...

Oh chebby. Can't you just come to the same conclusion as everyone else and accept that I'm usually right? - Men!

I wouldn't consider even the new RS3 expensive, materially speaking. In-house developed drive units and what I assume to be the same high standard of build ... though I haven't heard them.

Two minor things I didn't like about the original were port noise at higher volume and a slightly agressive tonal balance but considering what else there was around these would have been fairly easy to live with if a floorstander was needed. The small dimensions and sturdy build (related) probably help no end in comparison with larger, more impressive looking cheaper floorstanders.

I'm not sure what exactly I'd suggest for the OP in terms of standmounts with lots of bass, I simply dont know whats around these days but my usual suggestion of Ushers S520 may be to tame though they have plenty of good bass.

Kef's?

Ihave spoken to a lot of hifi shops today and they seem to like the monitor audio bx5 /q acoustics 2050i and dali zenzor, the monitor audio may just be out of reach at 499.00 but the dalis can be had for 419.00 so may go for them. but will get a copy of hifi choice to read there floor standing test.

I heard the previous IQ5s with a budget Arcam amp and sounded really good.

The price looks appealing and should give you the SQ you require: http://www.richersounds.com/product/floorstanders/kef/iq50/kef-iq50-blk
