could a dual 505 turntable be classed as hi-fi? if not could it be made to be so? does anyone know anything about not just the turntable but the brand, is it german? i am sure i have heard the name before but .....

I would say so, yes. Definitely at the "budget" end of the market, but for many people, this was where hifi started.

It's a German company who were a very well known "proper" hifi company from the 60s until around 2000, when their name was bought by various supermarkets to sell their generic radios/micro systems etc. However, they are still making turntables, and still have a version of the 505!

I still have a 505/2, and with a reasonable modern cartridge on it (a replacement Ortofon OM5E for £35 is perfect) still sounds great.

They did have a tendency to shred the pitch belts, making speed tweaking a tad tricky. They are available online for about £20. Drive belts are far more reasonable at around a fiver.

Good solid decks that rarely let people down!

thanks for the input, think I will go down that route. may end up asking for more advice on this forum with regard to upgrading at a later date. this hi-fi lark is incredible, so much to learn. best way to start is obviously at the bottom and work up. every improvement is a revelation. trouble is what happens when you reach the top of the tree so to speak or is that unattainable? regards Robert

Yes I agree with "fatboy". I have a Dual cs505-2. Although I am not a "hi-fi buff" it sounds fine to me played through an old Sony 232l receiver.

I wonder what the new Dual t/t are like? Never seen a review anywhere. Does anybody know?

I used to have one, with a Nagaoka MP11 cartridge. It sounded great, and they were a 'best buy' back in the '80s. I wonder how it would compare with current budget 'best buy' turntables such as the Rega P1?

I still have a 505-4, which I've kept after buying a Rega P3-24. The Dual is a nice sounding well made turntable, but does not compare wiith the Rega, which retrieves more detail and does not sound as soft as the Dual. However a Dual as a starter deck is very good value for money and will last.

I picked up a cheap 505-2 as an interim deck while I sold a Debut III with the view to putting the funds towards a better 2nd hand deck. I thought the Dual slaughtered the Pro-ject and the comparison was from the same two cartridges (AT440mla and Shure M75 with HE stylus)

Dosn't suprise me at all.
