What did I tell Ya. :)

http://listen.dts.com/pages/dts-x?tracking=DTSX

it looks like the speaker configuration for DTS x is flexible. Nice :)

it also mentions you can use ceiling OR height speakers, which sounds good to me :)

Nice! Looking forward to Marantz offering a firmware update!

By the way, Atmos is also flexible, and you can use height speakers as well.

Check the post from richmagnus on this thread:

https://www.avforums.com/threads/dts-x-is-finally-launched.1949477/

"Dolby specify the use of up to 34 speakers in an Atmos system. FH and RH ARE part of this specification.
D&M products allow for this Atmos speaker placement as does the Steinway P200 , Trinnov Altitude,Storm and Datasat RS20i processors.

Dolby recommends that these speakers are used in conjunction with either TF TM TR.
So YES they are DESIGNATED Atmos speaker locations.

I have spent many many hours with 5 different Atmos systems experimenting with the optimal Atmos layout for different rooms.

In my room FH's provide the best results. Dolby also recommend direct firing speakers for all speakers. I use tripole surrounds and will be using tripole for TM as they give far better results in medium and small rooms.

Dolby provide a set of guidelines.

I can assure you that I am def not running a pseudo Atmos system.

You will also find that DTS prescribe to the use of FH and RH speakers for DTS:X as well as in ceiling."

Got to hand it to Denon and Marantz for their backwards support.

when I bought my "top-o-the-range" Pioneer lx87 there wasn't a firmware update for Atmos even though it was less than a year old and Dolby had confirmed that it would be possible for receivers under 3 years to be upgraded via firmware.

looks like they're doing the same thing with DTS-X.

if I like the sound my next receiver later this year might well be Marantz or Denon.

The SR7009 will not get DTS:X upgrade according to a Marantz rep here:

Correct and I just hope the 7702 gets it or I will have to upgrade so soon! While the 8802 will be getting, Marantz have not denied or confirmed anything with regards to the 7702.

Would make sense for it not to have DTS X and HDCP 2.2, otherwise how will they sell the 8802!

Slightly off topic there - But yes DTS X is very flexible and like you BB I am using tripoles all around the back. I asked the Dolby Reps at the Whathifi show about them and they said it's fine, but keep them at ear level or at the most 1ft above your head. the 1ft above the head is to accomodate those with speakers in those positions.

Heck I have seen one person (dealer who shall remain nameless) suggest placing tripoles on the ceiling and 6 of them! There is no set rule which is great :)

i agree that this is fantastic...the bummer is that while At,so has some flexibility, it doesn't have the speakers-anywhere approach of dts-x, so we will still be restricted otherwise we wouldn't have be able to take advantage of discs with Atmos content :(
