DSP processing formats

When the input is prologic (basic stereo signal from Sky HD box), my receiver sends a processed 7.1 signal but a DD programme retains its native 5.1 output ignoring the extra speakers. I would expect the receiver to process any signal to 7.1 when set to this same DSP setting. Obviously when set to 'straight' or 'pure direct' there is no additional processing and 5.1 or 7.1 signals are as expected. An observation?

Curious Robin...my receiver outputs to my front presence speakers regardless of the input signal. Just checked with the DD signal that is output when the BBC HD news channel can't output due to local news channels not currently being in HD and my speaker layout display doesn't change on the front panel whilst my Drama DSP mode is engaged (or any of the others).

I don't think I receive any pro logic sound from my TiVo box so I can't test that one out but could it simply be down to the Sky Box here rather than the receiver? It's a bit strange that the receiver doesn't convert to 7.1 no matter what the incoming signal though as I would have thought it shouldn't matter what the sound format is coming into the receiver, very strange that one.

Hya Oldboy. :) Long time ... Your reply has made me even more curious. I will throw a 5.1 dvd at it and see. Your TiVo surely outputs prologic or am I mistaking the name of the marrix encoding? as well as dd 5.1 ofcourse.

Will report back but just had a thought - u mention yr front height but I guess u mean u get the full 9.1 processing

Hi Robin yeah been a while eh...good to speak to you again

I've just checked my TiVo box settings and in the audio section it just has an option for Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital to PCM so it looks like it doesn't carry Pro Logic at all although my receiver obviously carries the encode so I can't test out your issue by the looks of it...unless either of my consoles or blu ray player can be set up to throw out Pro Logic, will check and get back to you.

Just to clarify I'm running a 5.1 set up with the addition of front height/presence so a suedo 7.1 if you like, the front heights are only used when using any of the DSP modes and as standard I use the Drama setting. I'm currently looking at going full 9.1 by adding another set of speakers but I'm undecided on my direction at the moment. As the next set need to go as near to the sides of my sofa as possible I'm debating if I depart from my Dali Zensor set up and get some smaller speakers for those duties as they won't be quite so obvious and hopefully a bit cheaper...on the other hand for an even sound another set up Zensor 1's would be great. I just can't decide if I want the room to be full of speakers as it's bad enough now :?

Time for a thread on that subject me thinks...

Me thinks too. I thinks. I dont think my rears add much tho they are hidden behind the settee. I think my room too small to take advantage tho they may (?) be of benefit with proper 7.1 bd's. My experiments with front height didnt really work for me but I only used cheap full range units firing upwards since.my room wouldnt allow a proper placement. I did enoigh experimentation to make me think front heights properly placed could be useful.

Meanwhile back to my post .... I guess u use pcm? Sky hd box now uses hdmi for dd after a recent software update but I still use digital coax - just wondering if this may be my 'problem'. Back to my conical flask, Bunsen & safety specs ...

My front heights are really nice and add significantly to the soundfield so they are staying, but that's diverting from your post...

Back to your issue and the TiVo box outputs Dolby Digital via HDMI and that's how mine is set up as the PCM setting is only for amps and TVs that don't support Dolby Digital and it sounds better in Dolby Digital mode as any TV programmes that support Dolby do so as Dolby Digital so it's native rather than being processed into PCM by the TiVo box.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there and that the digital coax cable is the 'problem' here for sure and if you went over to HDMI that would solve it I think, can you test that at all?
