Hey

I watched Iron man and band of brothers on my new system below, and TBH I cant tell a huge difference in the above?

I watch sky movies and that sounds great and so does the HD movies.

Do you guys and gals hear a great difference? My sony PS3 is saying true HD and my amp seems to be ok, and when on sky movies my amp switches auto to DD.

Your opinions would be valued.

I definitely hear a difference. I cannot comment on Iron Man as I've not seen the bluray yet, but I have upgraded several of my DVD's to bluray and all have had a noticeable improvement. The sound is more dynamic and carries more weight, whether that be from an explosion, human voice or instruments. Subtle nuances and details are also more evident, but overall it is the slightly richer sound that DDHD and DTS HD MA provide that do it for me.
The discs I've upgraded so far are:
Order Of The Phoenix
Casino Royal
Dark Night
Monsters Inc (Although the DVD of this was very good too, so the difference was less evident than the others).
Batman Begins
Wall-e

The best you get on Sky, regardless of HD or not, is DD. Iron Man sounds fantastic on my system and the audio is the biggest plus for me with bluray.

totally agree with the comments posted, there is a huge difference. most blu rays have both soundtracks i.e DD5.1 and TrueHD. Switching between the different soundtracks mid-movie on the PS3 will sure reveal the difference!!

How do I switch to DD from HD in the PS3 settings mid movie?

You can select Audio either in the Blu Ray Menu whilst watching the movie and change the Audio Settings or you can do it old school and press 'Triangle' and select Audio in the ols PS3 Menu whilst the movie is playing.

Both can be interchanged whilst movie playback is happening. If you are unsure what audio is being ouputted, press the select button on movie playback and the information will be in the top right of the screen.

Hope this helps.

When I first setup my Home Cinema a few years ago. It took me a few weeks to realise that the early Blu Ray Movies output DD as standard and I had to change the Audio settings to HD. Ooops

Forum members came to my rescue :)

So

I got to go into the blu-ray settings in the movie and select this? (on some)

Cheers.

I thought if the screen on the PS3 shows HD then it would be HD?

Yes if On Screen the PS3 says HD Sound, then you are getting HD sent to your amplifier.

Also depending on your AV Amplifier you can check the 'Audio Input Information' - which tells you more about the signal it will be getting from the PS3 inputted into your AV Amplifier.

If you havent got this on your AV Amplifier dont worry. You mentioned earlier that your PS3 says its outputting HD sound and your AV Amplifier HD lights up. Your all set afaik. :)

I dont notice much difference either. I believe the reason for me is my marantz pre amp is that good that it makes dolby digital sound awesome so HD dolby is only a slight step up

That or the PS3 is awful at sending HD sound as PCM

There is certainly a big difference in my set-up. Much bigger 3D-soundfield, it sounds completely detached from the speakers, filling the room from left to right and front to back. Attack and speed are better, also the LFE goes lower. For me the biggest improvement with switching from DVD to Blu-Ray comes from the sound. A shame that there are not enough new titles on Blu-Ray compared to DVD (where i live).

I notice you dont seem to have a dedicated dvd player? So I assume you use your PS3 for dvds?

I have the original 60GB model and whilst I use my Pioneer for dvds I can tell you without reservation that fitting a 16 core braided cable to my PS3 made the sound FAR better (on everything, DD, games, DTS etc)

Might be worth checking what dynamic compression levels you've got enabled on the amp and the PS3 (if it gives you the option). The main difference between DD and TrueHD is the Dynamic range, if you've got compression enabled you'll be reducing that, making TrueHD sound less, well, dynamic.

Is the compression in the PS3 or the amp? what would it say, just compression?

There is a HUGE difference in the soundtrack between the two. I'm surprised that you were not able to distinguish the superiority of the Tru-HD track to the Dolby Digital version.

I changed my power cables after 1 year, so i knew how everything sounded. Must say: with the Supra power cables it sounds better. Was sceptical about it, but it is true.

Possibly both, either or even neither.

what would it say, just compression?

It'll be something like Dynamic Compression, don't know if Sony still refer to it as DRC (Dynamic Range Compression), I think they used to on their old amps, it'll be something along those lines. I don't have a PS3, so I'm just guessing here.

I recently watched Shine a Light - the Rolling StonesScorsese film?

On the extras they have Paint it Black but it's only in DD - i couldnt believe how much better the True HD in the main film sounded in comparison.

Huge Difference!!
