Dolby digital 2.0, Linear PCM 48

What is the difference between the two above, While watching the World Cup on my Humax HD PVR, if I watch it on ITV HD my receiver states Dolby Digital 2.0, but when I watch it on STV HD I get Linear PCM 48.

I just wondered as when I decode them as Dolby Pro-logic 2, the Linear PCM 48 sounds better.

LPCM is the method of encoding generally used for uncompressed audio.
