Does VLC media player playback in FLAC format?

I listen to a lot of music from my laptop, connected to a standalone DAC, connected to my hi-fi system.

I liked the interface of the Amazon Music Player over some other options I'd been using, but noticed the sound was a bit shallow and empty. On checking, I discovered that whilst the player will play FLAC files, it converts everthing to MP3 for playback!

I'm now using VLC, but can't find any info about its playback format.

Before I waste hours intently listening in order to decide, does anyone know if it's playing back in the full format? (my guess so far is 'yes').

yes. VLC plays pretty much anything video and audio wise.

Maybe check out foobar or media monkey which is probably the best free music player.

Thanks, but I know it can play any format. My question is about the format it plays back in; amazon player can run FLAC files for example, but it plays them back in MP3 format.

vlc will playback whatever format it is in. It doesn't convert anything.

This is not strictly true.

It will do things like downsampling and resampling on the fly if ASIO or WASAPI drivers are not utilised.

The Windoze default is to make things play and by whatever means necessary.

The use of ASIO or WASAPI drivers overrides this behaviour, at the expense of not being able to play files if the hardware cannot handle the sample rate natively.
