Does playing CD-R discs reduce the life of a CD player?

I read a rumour on a web page that playing home-burned CD-R discs in a hi-fi CD player can reduce the life of the CD player because the laser has to work at a higher strength to read the information on a CD-R compared to that on a regular comemrcial CD. Is there any truth in this? I actually e-mailed Arcam tech support about this weeks ago but they decided not to bother replying... This is not a mindless post - I'm just really getting into burning my own lossless compilation discs but don't want to do this if it is going to affect my CD player in the long run...

I highly recommend you to use good cd-r's, like verbatim etc. Using poor quality cd-r's reduce your cd player life.

on poor quality discs the laser struggles to read the disc and moves more to read it.

thus can wear out sooner.

it also depends on the quality of the cd player.

but to contradict myself years ago when cdr first came out everyone said write at 2 speed as writing at 4 speed wears out the laser and the music can jump.

nowadays i write at 48 speed and have no problems.

so if your got a decent cd player dont worry about it
