Anyway this is one Saturday I am not at my friend's place and I am enjoying my fully 'tricked' USB DAC with seperate power supply box, TM3Connections mains cable, OPA2107AP op-amp, Chord Crimson 0.5m interconnect.

'Shuffling' nicely through all my collection and sounding brill :)

Waiting for my first pressing (vinyl) of Dr Feelgood's 'Down By the Jetty' (1975 Mono) to arrive early next week I hope.

I am going to be the 'air' Wilko Johnson all week after that. (Jerks head in anticipation listening to Roxette in 256k AAC.)

chebby:Gerrardasnails:Maybe coaxial cables do make a difference (I use the Clearer Audio Silver Line). Maybe XLR cables make a difference and good ones (I use Chord Chorus 2) make a big difference. Most of all, I've said this before, I think you need to have a decent (£500 plus) amp and speakers (£500 plus) to get the most out of the DM.

Maybe, maybe not.

How about a £1500 amp (Primare i30) connected to a DM with Chord balanced XLR and Focal JM 726 Chorus (pre 'V' models) being fed by a Mac and Apple Lossless via optical?

This is how I have been listening to the DM almost every other Saturday since just before Christmas on a friend's system. (Many, many hours now.) Even after all this time - I still find the DM sound overblown in upper bass and 'thick' (like my head is feeling hot and stuffed with cotton wool) and headache inducing, regardless of which filter is employed. I know it is not his system at fault because his Rega Apollo (and P3-24) both sound very musical and pleasant and well defined in the bass.

It is only fair to point out that my friend enjoys the DM and likes the extra bass so really it comes down to a matter of taste - as always. The DacMagic is not a 'wonder-product' that will suit everyone. It is not a 'giant slayer'. Even the most slavering reviews I have read in all the hifi mags over the last few months acknowledge that there are far better DACs. (More costly obviously.)

Enough people like it and enough people have favourably reviewed it to say it would be worth auditioning for anyone in the market for a good budget DAC. It would be silly not to as my friend (but not me) would testify.

Just don't doubt your system - or your ears - if you don't like it.

That is what is surprising to me, regarding the harshness of the sound, because since the beresford is very neutral, not in the least bit what i would describe as harsh, i expected that the dac magic would if anything be an improvement on that. I only have the mere BR2 speakers and a sub 500.00 amp and i can really hear the benefit, i might add i might spent a total sum of 11.00 on the digital cable and rca interconnects.

This basically sums up the way i feel about it, the music is more rhythmic, seperation is much greater, the music has a more refined feel and prior to the beresford, some parts of the music did sound a bit muddied, but not any longer and the bass is very crisp. So all in all from what others have said, perhaps not a giant killer but a great upgrade from my humble budget setup
