diy record cleaning ideas

Dear forumites,

I just got back some vinyl that I had lent to my brother. They have been violated to say the least, been scratched and are dirty. Can't bear to listen to the silent tracks as they are full of pops and clicks. Can anyone suggest ways of improving it? Mind you, I cannot get a hold of record cleaning fluid and carbon fibre brushes in my country so home remedies would be nice.

A local second hand record store recommends warm water, washing up liquid and a soft sponge.

Distilled water, isopropyl alcohol and a drop of rinse aid, there's lots of people making their own mixtures on the web (I think JD does here as well), google for recipes.

Also, totally agree with the_Lhc on homemade fluid. I used this together with the Disco Antistat, and the results were fantastic, much better than expected. Even my most abused records are playable now.

Hi BB, do you use the rack supplied to let the records dry naturaly, I have read that some spin them dry in a 'drill?' . Have also read the cleaning solution supplied is best not used leaving a residue, the home made concotions being much better?
