Distorted sound

When I play 'busy' tracks, say Radiohead or Depeche Mode with quite a bit going on, the sound gets what I an only describe as distorted. Not enough to make me go 'jesus christ', but worse insomuch as I know it sounds crap but I can't quite describe why.

My system is an old ProJect turntable, looks like basic ish model, Rotel RA 1062 amp, and DALI opticon 2 mk2 speakers.

The sound on say John Coltrane Blue Train sounds beautiful.

All suggestions welcome, its driving me mad

Check/Clean/Replace the stylus

You need to check the setup of your turntable - cartridge alignment, tracking weight, anti-skate... Also the condition of your stylus, obviously.

Yes, assuming that your distortion is not present on any other source(s) - then you're going to need to become a lot more familiar with your turntable than you currently seem to be 😉

Thank you for the replies all, when three people all suggest the turntable setup I'd be daft to ignore it. Quickly looked up 'setting up' and quickly became aware how little I know and that I should go and read up on setting the arm/ article up.

Cartridge Ortofon OMB xx , Stylus fitted is a aftermarket Reloop DJ stylus
OMB5/OMB10/OMB20/OMB30/OMB40 would have been fitted originally at the ProJect factory
