Direct drive VS Belt Drive

Aged 14 I had an (idler wheel driven) Sugden Connoisseur BD2 'handed down' to me by my older brother.

I remember those, chebby, but I thought they were belt driven. It wrapped around the platter which was only 10" or so, meaning an LP hung off the egde!

Nopiano is correct the BD2 was belt drive, hence the BD..... I think chebby is, mistakenly, referring to the Connoiseur Classic which was idler-drive.
