Digital Interconnects - Coax or Toslink

In simple terms, does anybody favour one over the other? On short cable runs, I suspect that the efficiency of fibre does not justify the extra conversion processes ( electrons to light to electrons). I have read that SQ is best with coax, but has anybody tried side by side comparisons?

Optical because it electricially decouples both devices. Coax because there is one stage less for conversion that would have to be done with optical. Also optical can get damaged if badly bent.
