Just spent my first couple of hours with my new Denon.

Ive always been very happy with my Marantz BD5004, but would like to give 3d a go. Tbh I hadn't considered the Denon until Superfi had it for £380.

First off switch it on. What a racket. Sounded like some industrial cleaning device. I put on BD of Closer to the Edge. Played just fine although in the quieter passages the noise from the player was really distracting. Anyway halfway through the sound started breaking up quite badly. I took it out haven't bother trying cleaning it yet, put in BD Despicable Me, the grinding noise is there with a vengeance, to my mind unwatchable. Pause it and it's unbearable. At this stage I'd made up mind it was going straight back.

I looked up issue in other forum, and yes it has been reported before. Anyway, I tried the DVD copy of DM, and this time no irritating noise at all. This point was made on the forum. I then put in ACDC Live at River Plate none of the dodgy noise, on pause a slight fan noise but not obtrusive. Then back to the BD of DM, all good this time.

So calmed down a bit and will continue to give it a go, although its on probation.

PQ & SQ improvements are hard to notice, not really practical to do side by side, but I will say if you find a 2nd hand BD5004 for just 2d, don't think you'll do significantly better.

Oh, and I prefer the aesthetics f the Marantz. The fascia of the Denon seems a little busy.

As I said it was because I wanted 3d, but I'm not quite convinced yet.

Well it all seems to have settled down. I guess maybe 24 hours at room temp has help with any gremlins.

I thought the Closer to the Edge BD was faulty but it works fine on my Sony 570. The joys of blu ray and updates. Had the Marantz over two years only one update needed, apart from that it was faultless

Ive told a friend they can have the Marantz but if they don't, I may well keep it. After eBay fees and p&p Id be lucky to get £150. And it's too good to go at that.

Im convinced (not side by side test) that PQ & SQ on the Denon is no better, but I admit CDs seem better.
