Anybody tried to hook up an external amplifier to their AVR to boost two channel performance ?

The theory is you can use a quality stereo amp to drive front left and right speakers ,leaving the weaker avr amp to drive the centre and surrounds

In practice it's a matter of identyfying the correct pre outs and then connecting 2x rca from the pre out of the amp to the 2 x rca input of the stereo amp

But has anyone actually done this and what's the sonic improvement

Not much: the limiting factor will still be the preamp section of the receiver.

Better by far to run your stereo components through a stereo integrated amp, and use one of the line inputs on that amp to take a feed from the front channel preouts on the receiver.

Interesting !

The Nait xs has an av by pass function which I'm assuming allows you to " by pass " the rubbish pre amp section of the reciever and benefit from the gorgeous Naim sonic and power in front left and right speakers . This is achieved by the connections I suggested.

Perhaps I'm over selling the gain ?
