Hi folks,

Im finally upgrading my tv and getting a plasma (or lcd) and im not sure my ageing dvd player will cope.

Im not thinking of getting blue ray for a bit yet as dvd but im not sure if the upsampling on this player wil be ok on normal dvds.

Would an HD ready plasma be overkill for this player?

your thoughts!

thanks, alex

Hi Omac

Welcome to the forum!

I assume your old DVD player will not upscale, meaning it won't allow you to get the most out whichever TV you opt for. You can get Sony's entry level Blu Ray player for not much more than £100 and this will give you much better results. That said, some TVs do upscale very well, but I'm sure most (perhaps all) of the contributors to this forum would recommend upgrading to a budget Blu Ray player at the very least. You didn't say what budget you're working with, or what size television you were looking at? Obviously this information has a lot of bearing on any feedback offered...

thanks for the reply.

i was thinking in getting the
pana viera tx p42s20b screen.

As this has component inputs, could i used the denon onboard faroudja progressive chip for the time being and upgrade to a newer player later on?

thanks,

Alex

good choice of tv , its more or less a reworking of last years g10 , but why persist with the denon when as strapped has said , a good bluray player is only £100 , maybe even less ? many bluray discs are now available for a fiver , and you will notice a big difference in quality compared to an upscaled dvd , the sony 360 will also be excellent for your excisting dvds ..

Conversely, since the OP said he/she had no interest in Blu-ray at the moment, why spend £100 on a player now when the Denon will do the job he/she requires more than adequately until a move to Blu-ray is required?

No point in junking what is still a very good upscaling DVD player in favour of a budget BD machine just for change's sake.

I agree with Andrew, The Denon is a very fine player, which will give better results with DVD than the sony Bluray player. Connect the Denon via HDMI and you will be fine. If you really want Bluray then the Sony would be a good economical choice.

thats a fair point , perhaps im thinking more about what id like , and not the op ..

however , assuming the op will continue buying dvds , that will not cost much less (if anything) than discounted blurays , wouldnt a £100 investement now , ensure a step up in quality of his/hers movie collection from here on ? im sure the denon would fetch something on ebay ? thats the route id take anyway , hd is the future ..

If upscaling from DVD, I'd still say it's best to stick with the Denon for now. BD players continue to improve and their prices fall, so if and/or when he or she is ready to move on to Blu-ray I am sure it will be possible to buy a player at least as good as today's budget machines for no more than one would pay now, and probably somewhat less.

And I'm not a great subscriber to the 'buy new and bung the old one on Ebay' way of thinking: the Denon is still a top-notch DVD player, and while it's working well is worth more to the owner than the £50 or less it's likely to make on a good day on Ebay.

true enough , id flog it though , the sony 360 will upscale just as good , if he/she got £40 for the denon , then i think it would make sense adding £60 , and getting a bluray player that would give the op the option of buying blurays from now on , and thus utilising what the panny can do .. the change to hd will have to be made sometime , id do it now ..

for me , theres no room for sentiment , in the pursuit of picture quality

I think I already answered that one above. I'd stick to using an HDMI connection from the player to the TV.

If the Denon you have is a 1920, then stick with it!

I've never stopped regretting selling mine and buying Blu Ray as the DVD picture is inferior and the Blu Ray picture is very little different from the upscaled Denon picture!

Now if only someone could come up with a cheap Blu Ray player with the upscaling / native performance of the Denon and I'd be switching faster than Bolt could get down a 100 yard track.

BTW I heard that Faroudja no longer make upscaling chips, is this true?

Why should it be a 1920 when the OP says it's a 2910?

Yes, that superhero dog is quite fast.

Not that I am aware, but it's now part of ST Microelectronics, which is busy leveraging the technology for all it's worth...
