De-interlacing

My laptop has a BD drive and I've been using it as a BD player into a 1080p TV while I'm away in a holiday rental. So, here's the question. There's an option on the player (PowerDVD10) to 'perform smart de-interlacing'. What's the purpose of this? I suspect that it might be to do with the non-HD display on the laptop as I would've thought that the 1080p monitor would do this where necessary. The reason I asked is that I just watched '2012' and some shots looked so electronic (I assume that they used HD cameras here and there) that I wondered if I had the player on the wrong setting.

monitors don't deinterlace, some graphics cards do. That option will deinterlace sources flagged as interlaced (even blu-rays can be interlaced)
