when would you use a dac? is it only between computer and hifi.. linn mimik, kolektor, lk85,brenan jb7 jukebox connected via headphone socket to kolektor. thanks for any help.

I would use a DAC when using a source that do not has a proper built-in DAC. This goes for computers, cheap CD/DVD players, DAB radios, portable recording devices etc.

Another reason would be the convenience of using a remote controlled digital switch and one DAC for a number of sources, when the number of analogue inputs on your (pre) amp is limited.

thanks Fahnsen, should i be using a dac between jb7 and linn kolektor, Jb7 has a160 gb harddrive where most of my cds are stored at cd quality,sound is very close to my linn cd player but with added convienience of not having to get out of my armchair,plus cds are out of the lounge wife loves that.
