This may be a stupid question but I'm going with it anyway because I don't know if all DACs also work as headphone amplifiers. Anyway please could you advise me on what DAC was also make a good headphone amplifier say on a budget of upto £400 max? Thanks.

Don't need to spend that much - £200 should do it for the superb Beresford Bushmaster DAC Headphone Amp.

With the change left over you could buy a 12V DC External Battery to power the Bushmaster (much better than any number of fancy Linear Power Supplies) for about another £50 to £70
This DAC powered from the battery pack will sound as good as anything up to £1000.

It might also help if you mentioned what headphones you plan to use it with. To be honest, this section of the forum doesn't get a lot of traffic but we have some very knowledgable and experienced members in the headphones section who should be able to guide you.
