Hi!

I am looking for a very good DAC to use between my iPad (that I use to stream Spotify) and my HiFI system's pre-amplifier. I understand I could use the iPad's audio jack as an interface.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

... Is that you can't use the audio jack, because it outputs an analogue, not a digital, signal. You would need the iPad camera connector to connect to the DAC (I think).

Curious question really, there is no point in getting an expensive DAC if you cannot bypass the iPads own.

you can by using the camera connector (I believe). I think people use the Graham Slee Bitzie DAC this way with iPads and iPhones. Check the Slee forum if interested.

I had an issue whereby I wanted better quality sound from my iPhone 6, and iPad. Someone suggested streaming to an Airport Express and using the DAC in that.

I've been really very pleased with the result, not least because it was only £80!!!

might be worth a punt for you....

This is why I asked what type of i pad connector Francois has.

If it is the older 30 pin he could buy an I pad dock such as the Pure i20 , Cambridge audio iD100 or a Arcam Dr dock, any of them will enable him to get a direct digital output to send to the dac of his choice .

The Pure and the Arcam also have good built in dac's but the Cambridge iD100 only provides a digital out but no dac .

You can get a lightning adapter for the later i models but it does raise the level of the i pod that may cause stability problems .

I use my ipad connected to a Cambridge Audio id100 which sends a raw digital output to my ECD1 dac and it sounds fantastic, they all come with a remote control for the i pad / phone.

Good ideas. However, still waiting foraging get back with answers. If he wants portability I was going to suggest the rather excellent Oppo HA-2, but it is a tad costly.

I have an Oppo HA-2 and can vouch for the sound quality. It is designed to work with Apple, Android or windows, so is very versatile as well.
