I'd just like to have a short rant about the likes of Currys and Comet. As it's personal experience I don't think it will be against house rules but I'm sure 'the mods' will 'slap' me if I cross a line!

Ok - first why do they even bother having the tv's turn on. Image quality on the signal (usually a sky repeat feed) is so bad you just can't tell what the PQ is going to be like. There are one or too unit's running Blu ray discs but these are mostly samsungs which they favour for some reason and the odd 50" plasma.

A short story in how to lose a sale!

Ok so I've been dithering about upgrading the old CRT for over a year now but a redecoration of the rooms has force my hand. The problem is they don't produce the perfect tv yet (well not for the right money lol). So we decided to go for something cheep for now and then look at upgrading again in a few years.

Any how in comet yesterday spent ages eye up tv's with the boss and swatting off salesmen every two minuets till we'd decided what we were doing. We plumped for a 40EX503 which was more than I wanted to spend on what was a stop-gap tv. So along walks Mr Saleman 27!

"Can I help"

"Yes I'm looking at the 503 and wondered what your policy on returns over backlight bleed was?"

Slightly confused look... then

"All repairs are done in the home."

Ok he'd lost the sale at that point but it would be come evident that he didn't want to sell a £900 tv.

In fact he started to tell me how it uses fluorescent tubes for lighting and that they were rubbish and that I needed a LED one (que the samsung).

"Do you have Sony LED?"

"Yes we have the NX.... but have I shown you this other samsung... It's my favorite!"

Incidentally were now at the £1300 mark

He then started to tell me that LED was better for backs as the can be turned off individually..

"Yes but that only on a full array backlight" - i asked.

"No sir the edge lit panels do it too!"

but wait the then states

"LED are also better as the turn on and off many more times a second giving soother motion and better response time!"

Now I could be wrong but I always thought response time was down to the panel and refresh rates were the electonics and that the backlight was just that, a light.

By the end of this he had walk me round and shown me most of samsung.. (cos clearly the shop must not have stocked anything else!)

But finally brought me to the £1800 3d err... Samsung and told me spending £500 more on 3d and future proofing would be sensible...

Err.. £500 but I was looking at a £900 TV. Even his maths was bad.

So he'd had us for a good 20 mins

"hum... interesting can we have five minuets to talk it over?"

"Of course sir"

"Run woman, run and try to dodge the twelve salesmen guarding the door!"

THE END

I feel so much better now..... rant over lol

:)

I learned, after a particularly poor episode of product aftercare 20 years ago, never to trust one of these well known chains with your money.

I now only use them to benchmark prices but use local independant or mail order suppliers, depending on price/guarantee offers on at the time.

Hi I would only use these stores to buy something for the kitchen, and that is only if I can not find it cheaper elsewhere which you can most of the time. That goes for PC World as well.

You may have problems buying something for the kitchen in PC World...

We had a similarly entertaining trip to PC World a year or so back.

Wanted to buy a new multi-function printer thingy.

Me "can you explain the difference between these two (Canon) products"

Salesperson "No, I'm sorry I can't. We're out of stock of that one"

Me "So can you explain the difference between them"

Salesperson "No, because we have no stock I can't look at the box to see what the difference is"

Hmmm!

And of course, in the oher part of the same chain, we had a (failed) attempt to sell an extended warranty on a toaster. The warranty was half the cost of the appliance!

I never shop in that chain unless I am desperate.

I'm wth Byronmorris on this .Last year I bought a Pana V10 ,but found the cheepest price locally and then went to Harry Garlicks (a very good east lancs electrical retailer). They matched the price and I even got 12 months intrest free credit. After a couple of days the set developed a picture fault so I called them and the following morning an engineer came and fixed it. That evening the fault returned. Called them again and the following day I had a brand new V10 delivered and installed in my front room.Same process would have taken several weeks and a couple of days of work (someone will be there between 7am and 7pm , or maybe am or pm if you're lucky) if bought from comet/currys etc..The guys H G came at a tme specified by me . Top marks to Harry Garlicks.

Many, many years ago ( about 37 ) I worked for Curry's.We used to have a bonus on certain items which we were given a list for. So of course those items would get pushed sales wise to the detriment of every other line. Don't know if that still happens though.

I always now insist on things coming in a manufactures sealed box as well, I'll leave you to guess why. Btw I dont use that particular chain if I can help it.

LOL what I meant to say is I would not but anything from Rip Off World. They are expensive and can be clueless. A few years ago my parents went into a store to buy a PC and said they needed one for mainly browsing the net. They got sold a PC with no modem in. I wish I was around because I would have never suggested to go in to a PC world.

I think these chains (and it is not only in AV but probably everywhere, e.g. photography etc) target the majority of the general public, the underinformed part mainly (or at least this is where their sales techniques work best). And it must be working for them as they continue existing. Business is business.

I was in a currys/PC world on saturday, in their "home cinema room" i asked if they could put a movie on the blue ray player instead of a football DVD so i could see how the movies sounded on the Kef sys they had. I was told, unfortunately because of how everything is setup i cant change the DVD.

Once she left i walked over to another demo they had playing star wars, removed the DVD and walked it over to the cinema room, funnily enough it worked just fine and sounded excellent actually.

She lost out on selling me about 2.5k worth of system.

I did work out the whole system i wanted to buy using their room, but of course i wont be buying it off that lot who don't have a clue.

It's probably one of the new megastores, the one near here (Cribbs Causeway) actually has quite a surprising array of products including the Myryad thingy that someone was talking about on here the other day. They have the full KEF iQ range as well, although sadly they've realised the iQ90s should actually cost MORE than the 70's, not 150 quid less...

Currys, Comet, PC World (what is a PC, anyway?), Microsoft, Philips (TVs), Sky, Tesco, B&Q, Wickes, Kwik Fit, Halfords, Richer Sounds, SuperFi, 3 (mobile network), TalkTalk/Tiscali TV - eww, eww, eeewwwwwwwwww!

Apple stores, Sevenoaks S&V, Audio T, Billy Vee Sound Systems, Future Shop, Amazon, John Lewis, Sainsbury's, Whitten Timber, Vodafone, Freeview/Humax, Stevens & Stevens (VAG specialists) - all splendid! (IMHO.)

Caveat emptor!

Nothing really wrong per se, just don't believe a word they say; if you shake hands with anyone there, count your fingers afterwards; if the product needs to be returned/swapped more than once, they become a tad terse and unhelpful; economical with the truth re the price-matching policy; too pushy re in-house brands (ie Cambridge); and during hot summer days, the stores reek of the staff's BO.

IMHO, best used as a discount store when you're 100% certain which product(s) you want.

Oh that might be ok then, i know exactly what i want. Obviously make sure its all new up opened etc and get the hell out of there.

I'm looking to get a whole new system in a couple of weeks. What do you think of Onkyo 608, Kef 2005.3K2, Panasonic 42'G20 and just some basic cabling for now as i'll be broke. was also looking at a Yamaha 1065. i've got 2k to play with.

That's funny, every one I've been have been the model of helpfulness. Yes it helps if you know what you want and if you know what you're talking about but that applies to anywhere. I went into a Sevenoaks recently and asked about the difference between two subwoofers, it quickly became apparent that the chap I was talking to really didn't have the faintest idea what he was on about, especially when he started telling me "facts" about one of the subs that I knew were incorrect.

Sorry, can't comment re Onkyo, Yamaha & Kef that you mention.

Currently debating/researching TVs myself. FWIW, I'm a tad wary of recent/current Panasonic plasmas after reading much interweb ranting re fading black levels after relatively short-term use.

Have you tried posting an advice-query in this forum's Home Cinema section?
