I need to convert about 800 mp3 files that are currently encoded at 320 kbps.
I need to convert them all down to 128 kbps.
Can any one suggest a solution?

I use dbPoweramp musicconverter. It can do all your files in one go. It isn't free, but its been worth it for me. I rip everything in FLAC, and have an MP3 copy for portable use.

The results will mean you get a transcoded file, some people say this is bad but it's a personal preference. Transcoding from a higer bit rate to a lower one is generally not too bad, going the other way is not worth it. Read THIS for more info.

I use a great little program called lamedropXPd.exe which uses the Lame encoder. You don't need to install it just unzip and run it, you'll need the lame .dl file to go with this. It allows you to just drag and drop the mp3's onto the interface and it starts to code them to the settings you have chosen.

There are lot's of program out there that can do this, foobar will and also some other tools.

I didn't notice if you said you are using a Windows machine or a Mac. If its Windows, then the above suggestions will work well. If you are using a Mac, I would suggest Max (http://sbooth.org/Max). I would caution though, I just cannot imagine using 128kbps for any situation as its effect on sound quality will be huge. 320kbps is an OK compromise if space is a concern instead of using Apple lossless or FLAC, but 128kbps is highly compressed and will be apparent even on average equipment, never mind quality amp/speakers/headphones. Is space the primary concern here, as once you've converted those songs and gotten rid of the 320kbps tracks you'll always be stuck with the highly compressed music which may or may not concern you - but worth thinking about now before its too late to change your mind.ÿ

If you use iTunes, change your current rip rate to 128. Then right click on all the tracks, and you'll have an option "create mp3 version"

Don't forget to change t back to higher quality ripping after you're done.

Thanks for that John. Thats exactly what im looking for.
Im using a PC. I have all of my mp3s encoded at 320 kbps.
A friend of mine has got his mum a nano for Christmas, and the songs he has chosen to put on there, will not fit. Because she has never had anything like that before, we are taking a chance that she will not notice any quality loss in the process.
We had resigned ourselves to losing about 400 songs so we could fit all the 320kbps mp3s on.
This is the easy solution we were looking for.
Thanks again.
