I’m considering buying one of two pairs of B&Ws that are fairly local.

One pair is the 684. It has some dents in the tweeters, but appears to be in good condition otherwise. I wouldn’t mind having to swap out the tweeters if need be—I see there are a lot of B&W parts online. the asking priceis $600. I’d be willing to add a powered sub (maybe the ASW608) to round our the bottom.
The other pair are some 683 S2. They appear to be in great condition. I figure this pair wouldn’t need a sub. They’re $1300
The room I’ll be listening in is a small room, about 8x12.
I have an older Sony amp to use, until I replace my Pioneer Elite in my home theater after Marantz releases an HDMI 2.1 AV home theater amp. Then the Pioneer will take charge.
I won’t be able to listen too loudly, so I want clarity over volume.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

That's a lot of firepower for a room that small. Given that you can't listen too loudly, I wouldn't add a sub either. The 684s will be plenty. If the bass is still too much, you can sell them on with the repairs done and hopefully make a small profit.
