Hello

A friend has recently bought a Samsung 42D6xxx TV along with a new PC which he will be using as a blu ray player hooked up to an older Sony STR-K880. However this amp, as far as I understand, doesn't send sound over HDMI. So he thought to connect the amp to blu ray via optical and then HDMI from amp to tv. However, there is no optical connection on the pc (blu ray!).

Any ideas how to get this set up to output 5.1 sound?

Me head is puddled.

As always, cheers.

Assuming the PC must have a 5.1 soundcard or better, then I imagine it has some sort of spdif output. Go into "sound" settings in the control panel and make sure there is a "digital audio" option in the devices.

Then the PC must either have an optical or coaxial spdif (or an HDMI out of course, which I assume it hasn't)

Many PCs have a "hidden" optical output, that is also a headphone socket. So make sure the digital audio is selected as default device, play something back, and see if there is a red light inside the headphone socket. If there is, you need a plug converter...

If not, there must be a coaxial spdif output. In that case you need a coaxial to optical converter

If it hasn't either, then it hasn't got digital out and you will need to simply use stereo (unless it has analogue outputs for all channels)...ie use a single headphone to twin RCA lead

Cheers for the detailed response. The pc does indeed have a 5.1 sound card, so my mate will be trying that route. If that doesn't work, it'll be a new Amp.

Thanks again.
