Confused - Streaming over USB from a NAS

Help, I'm confused!

Currently I'm streaming FLAC files stored on a Tranquil PC NAS using a wired Squeezebox receiver. I usually control the receiver via an ipad/ipod using Ipeng. It all (usually) works well.

I'm about to upgrade my dac from a Beresford TC 7510 to one that handles asynchronous usb as well as the squeezebox (haven't decided which to go for at present but the choice does look pretty good). Here lies my problem (or ignorance).

How do I play files from the NAS while still retaining remote control via an ipad/ipod app? Do I use the 'squeezeplay' software from logitech (never tried it so don't really know what it does)? Or can I use other media players?

Any advice on this isue would be greatly welcomed.

ps. Has anyone moved from a squeezebox to USB and what have you found with sound quality?

If it bothers you, Squeezeplay doesn't support anything above 16 bit 44.1KHz.

I guess you're trying to connect your NAS directly to your new DAC? If so, you'll need to run some music software on your NAS, so you'll be limited by what OS you're using on your NAS. Are you running a Linux variant or Windows Home Server?

To answer your last question, I haven't heard any difference comparing a PC to my Squeezebox Touch, but haven't ever tried a DAC that supports async USB. I'd choose the most convenient if I were you.

Can you use a PC/Mac and connect the NAS and dacto that, I find sq is extraordinarily good, especially with async dacs and you can play everything 24/384 included.
Keith.
