It's easily done but the magazine has got me confused. The mid-range system best buy reads cyrus 6se and 6xp with ATC SCM 11 speakers. read the individual reviews and all seems clear except that the speakers are said to require an amp of around 100 watts and the 6xp is a mere 40. help me out here please or I will never persuade myself to spend the money!

The Cyrus pairing would be a good start on which to base your judgements, as they are really superb bits of kit at their price points.

If I was starting from scratch though I would certainly listen to a at least one other system as a reference...

Speakers tend to polarise opinions a lot more, and you really need to listen to several pairs with your chosen electrics to make a choice, especially with room size taken into consideration.

Don't get too wprked up about power figures. The Cyrus 6 XP should be fine at normal listening levels, although if you have a larger room you may consider the 8 XP for a bit more oomph. Current delivery and dynamic power tends to be more important than continuous power output. Also look at speaker sensitivity if you are worried about partnering with an apparently low powered amp.

Good point. They are great buys separately, but probably not the best match.

In January's one make system supertest the 6se and 6xp were matched with Dynaudio Focus 110's in the test which gave an overall 4* rating.

The instant upgrade recommendation was to try a pair of SCM11's (but then it also recommended adding Cyrus's own PSX-R to the 6se !?!?!?!?!?!?!?)

If I may be allowed to paraphrase "Reviews are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools!"

A mistake we acknowledged, apologised for and corrected in this thread over two months ago

So what is the power rating thing on amps for speakers etc all about, my amp is only rated at 36 watts, speakers 50-200 watts, but the amp is more than enough for them and has plenty of power left over, i even auditioned a pair of 804 speakers with the amp and it drove them fine. I am very confused

Thats my point surely.

Your amp is only rated at 36 watts CONTINUOUS ouput, but in reality its dynamic power output is much greater. Is your Sugden a Class A amp? If so, then its likely that it will have a high current output. Current is what starts/stops the speaker cone movement, giving control to the sound.

Hence my point about the 6 XP, although rated at only 40 watts/channel, it's dynamic power is more, allowing it to drive apparently overspecce'd speakers. For most of us, unless you are spending silly money on amps from Krell, Mark Levinson etc with massive power outputs, speaker sensitivity is more important to absolute volume as opposed to power.

Pre amp is class A, power amp is class A/B, if that makes a difference.

Right stick with me on this...

I own a Golf GT with a petrol engine producing 150 BHP (power) and about 145 lb/ft of Torque (lets call that current).

My wife has a Skoda with a diesel engine producing 90 BHP and about 190 lb/ft of Torque.

The Skoda has more overtaking ability in-gear than the Golf, but as speed increases, the Golf will pull ahead since power becomes more important as wind resistance increases.

For an amplifier, higher current (Torque) will give more instantaneous punch at normal listening levels. As the volume increases, higher power will give more volume (speed), but that really doesn't matter for most of us who listen at normal levels...

Does that make sense or have I confused you even more?

I posed a similar question last year about the practicalities of ATC and low powered amps.

Lock this thread now! Seriously, there are many, many opinions - the simplest one from me is - if it sounds ok to you at whatever constitutes your 'normal listening level' then fine, don't worry about power, current etc.....

Well common sense should apply throughout!

SCM11's do not require 100W plain and simple. A wide range of amps will drive these very well, they're an easy load. Sure, with amps that have a bit more current you'll get the audible benefits of greater control and superior dynamics. This can occur in the right amp rated much less than 100w, so don't get hung up on the power rating alone, current output and damping factor are far better indicators.

The best advice has been given, if you're not sure go listen for yourself -trust your own ears.
