Macspur

Spelling: 'Richard Lindgren' Transpose g and d, 'n' at the end not an 'm'.

Hi,

Is there a web site that lists albums and/or recordings stating whether compression has been implemented, or the average Dynamic Range of a recording.

This would be very useful for people to know which recordings are optimal.

Regards,

Shadders.

As mentioned above

http://www.dr.loudness-war.info/index.php?search_artist=&search_album=

It has not got every album of course but that is the best I know of.

It is surprising the difference between the same album but different releases.

Hi,

Thanks for that - really helpful.

Regards,

Richard.

On the DR database, if you click at the top of a column it will give you the top and bottom scores. So you can see the best or worst and then under a artist do the same or even each album. Not quite a few SACDs are worse than the ordinary cds. For example Steely Dan, worst is Gaucho sacd.

I had the same reaction when I first heard Tom Waits, I bought his album 'the Heart of Saurday Night'. This album (vinyl) is now one of the first I grab for evluation, I particularly like the track 'Dimonds on my Windshield' . . . as I think on it, I was not bowled over by Richard Lindgens voice either, however, after a couple of listens, I started to apreciat the synergies of voice, style and instumentation.

If you listen to Tom Waits, you will hear a few different backings, there are a couple of orchesteral ones that dont work for me, compared with the minimalist 'Dimonds . . . '.

So I give an artist a chance to break down my prejudices . . . some do, but there are a lot that sound the same whatever they sing, which I find boring. Probably a reason why I tend to lean towards instamentals? Just a personal view Mac.

Yes some voices are an acquired taste, some I never do acquire like Cohen. Some like Dylan, Neil Young I don't mind because the strength of the material.

One guy I have been listening to lately is Jeff Talmadge, tracks off Blissville, 40 days in the rain and Take a drive with me are great but I understand he won't suit everyone and I don't like some of his slower stuff.

Agree about Dylan, Neil young etc., I can take em or leave em . . . Leonard Cohen, pre early 2000's, very ordinary, but the last 10 years, there is a maturity in his voice that draws me like a magnet, 'London Live Concert' great recording, content and the backing is superb. 'Old Ideas' is a standard album after midnight for us, Spotify, CD or Vinyl, we happily listen to any, Banjo and Lullaby are particularly enjoyed tracks, although the whole album is a pleasure to Hazel and me.

You may want to try Ryan Bingham on spotify, Mescalito and Junky Star I think are quite good.

Thanks, but not for me... a bit too gravelly. I'm quite hard to please when it comes to male singers... prefer the likes of Joshua Radin, Joshua Hyslop and Ben Howard, Richard Shindell Peter Bradley Adams and William Fitzsimmons.

Fair enough, Joshua Hyslop sounds promising, not so keen on Ben Howard his guitar playing gets on my wick.

If you look at DR site there is some software on the top right, does that not measure DR? It is not free but has 40 day trial.
