Hi,

If you choose a turntable without a lid may I suggest that you look at a company in Germany (IIRC) called SOTA?

My Inspire Apollo t/t had no lid and I mounted it on a self made wall shelf. I took measurements and where access slots for wiring were needed and submitted these to their website - they came back with a quote which I accepted and the'kit' was with me within a week. It is not a moulded unit but rather bolts together with the tiniest nuts and bolts and so looks slightly industrial in appearance which suits the design of the Apollo.

You can specify clear or tinted and even reflective finishes ( nice for the rear panel to reflect the usually unseen back of the t/t) and the quality is superb. It came 'flat packed', very well protected and fitted together very accurately.

Mine is 50cm wide by 40 cm deep and 18 cm high in clear acrylic with 1 access slot and cost around £66 delivered. It came with full assembly instructions and cleanig tips.

As a final touch one could always get a graphics company to make some tasteful logos to apply to give it a custom look.

Hope that helps.

Stefan

I'm having a first demo of the Pro-ject Classic (and perhaps one or two others stocked at the shop) next Saturday.

Still struggling to find a retail outlet locally that stocks the ClearAudio Concept.

Sometimes finding a dealer can be extremely difficult even for kit that gets star-ratings and comes highly recommended. Such problems are only going to increase with the decrease in number of high street stores and the increased importance f the internet.

I'd urge everyone to do their best to support local enterprises as the opportunity to go and audition kit may well be dwindling fast especially for those that do not have the means to travel long distances.

Buying kit online and then returning it under the Distance Sales regulations is not quite the way to do it but may soon become the only way to do it for some.

I've always been a big advocate of high street retailers. Buying blind on the tinternet has never been my thing, the only time I've done that was with the Electro - underwhelmed, hence why I'm searching hi and lo for a retailer where I can try before buying.

I don't suppose you're anywhere near Harlow? I demoed and bought mine from The Audiobarn. Or if there's an Audio-T near you, I believe they should have it in... their Oxford branch had it a little while back.

Not really, DP. I'm in the deep south (Surrey). I just can't take a morning or afternoon off work.

Thanks.

Sound Fowndations (Aldermaston) is only 1h 11 minutes drive from your village. It is also the only official Clearaudio UK stockist listed by Clearaudio themselves.

Noooo... Aldermaston is between Reading and Newbury. I know the area quite well, and assuming the M25 and M4 is clearish it might be achievable in 90 minutes.

My bro lives in Blackwater (Surrey and Hants and Berks border) and it takes close on an hour from his gaff, if the traffic is not too clogged up.

Thanks anyway.

Just using a range of travel estimates using different routes.

I sort of knew in advance you never like to travel very far to demo or buy stuff.

I guess you'll just need to call all the dealers you are prepared to travel to, and ask them to get a Clearaudio in for you just to listen to. (Or buy it by internet and then return if you don't like it.)

TBH, Chebby, it's probably quicker to travel down to your neck of the woods - Audio-T Portsmouth. From where I live it only takes, with reasonable traffic, about 60 minutes. The A3 is only 5 mins from my doorstep.

Easy to answer: I've been working my butt off for the last few weeks, hence why I haven't been around for a while.

Since my initial dem I've heard the Rega RP6 (standard Rega cart). Like the other two it is fairly impressive, but still unsure whether the price hike justifies these turntables.

The next step, I suppose, is to have a home dem, and hope that sways the initial judgement.

Yip.

The thing I'm grappling with is I wasn't overly impressed with Rega RP6, Pro-ject Classic or Xperience. That could be a different proposition if I had a dem at home. But...

I really do fancy Pro-ject Xtension 9, although I'm not sure why. I've not read any reviews and nor do I know anyone using one. When it comes to hi-fi the gut tends to rule the head, and each one is having a right good punch up at present.

As with ClearAudio Concept there's no Pro-ject dealers in my area that holds stock of the more expensive Xtension range. Spending money without hearing is a BIG no no.

I understand how you feel about auditioning and gut feeling and would agree especially when spending this kind of money. It is my opinion though that you're unlikely to get a bad deck at this price point and ultimately what you're auditioning is the cartridge mostly.

Head[/b]: "Dear Mr. Gizzard, your best avenue is to buy a ClearAudio or a Pro-ject Classic. Should chime well with your amp.

Gut:[/b] "This is true Mr. Grey Matter, but peeping a little further down thoroughfare, an Xtension would be a no-brainer when it comes to upgrading the amp to something like a Tucana. I would have thought this would be obvious to a major organ like you"

Head:[/b] "Damn! Hadn't thought of that notion... that's a turn up for the old plus fours"

Gut:[/b] "This proves it takes guts."

That's my dilemma, Al. *biggrin*

I see.

Serious navel contemplation required. ;-)
