Closed Back Headphones Ideas Please

Just recieved this message from a friend and would appreciate suggestions.

which over-the-ear headphones should I buy? I intend to use them for my iPod/iPhone as much as my hi-fi, so they'd need to be closed.

Preferably around £50, though I was considering £150 if it'd really make much of a difference. I listen to all types of music.

I believe his hi-fi to be good quality.

Do they need to be closed backed to keep sound out, in which case the Goldring NS1000 are on budget and very good, or do they need to not leak sound that would annoy others? The Goldrings leak sound, not hugely so, but you could annoy others in a quiet room whilst someone else is wanting to sleep.

Sound out as he will be using them mainly walking to work and wont be worrying about annoying others.

Meant to add I have the NS 1000 and would echo your statements.

sennheiser hd 25 sp, bomb proof, great sound quality, easily replaceable parts, the only thing i've replaced are the ear pads which come in a leather type finish or the much nicer velor which i now have. Had my set for at least 15 years, dj's swear by them as do studios and the are not the massive kind that you see all those poncy footballer's wear, even my team, what a bunch of, oop's sorry, went off on a bit of a rant there.

If they are headphones for walking to work etc (outdoor use) and may get wet or snowed on I wouldn't think you would want to spend much. I recommend something like the Seenheiser PX200 II.

I'd suggest beyer dynamic dt235's.

Light weight, really comfy, pretty hard wearing and they come with a two year warranty, which was really easy to claim when i lost a channel 22 months in. Replaced by polar audio in a day or so with a brand new pair - simple.

They have a nice sound too, with great bass and good detail. I got mine for just over fifty pounds, but you should be able to find them cheaper, especially if you dont want them in white (like I did (I know, very nathan barley of me))....

I would stick with the Goldrings. they are tough, work whether there are batteries in them or not as they block out noise well without noise reduction on, but they still have the option.

Have you considered some Ultrasone headphones? Not as commonly known in hi-fi circles but the HFI780s are some of the better closed back models we've heard within your budget.

Does anybody know if the Beyerdyamic DT235's leak much sound? I bought a pair of Goldring NS1000's and my wife complains about the noise, so I'm looking for another pair that don't leak much.
