How can we maximise the enjoyment of opera and classical music from our Sony NX803? We have no interest in hearing things running round behind the sofa and have tended to switch off surround sound with previous system. Can one rig this TV up with a good DVD player / FM tuner and reasonable speakers? What else do we need and what would be compatible? Or is there an all-in-one solution that would work well for opera buffs? We do also enjoy good arthouse type films, but they tend to be fine anyway - it's the operas that just don't get there with most home cinema kits. Any ideas? Many thanks.

You can certainly use a TV as a source for any 2 channel amp and connect dvd player / tuner / speakers.

The options are almost limitless.

If you post an idea of what you want the system to be able to do (and of budget), I'm sure you'll be able to get fine assistance here.

The TV cost £800, so I guess we'd be willing to spend the same amount in total on the sound system. I had a very demanding job and was abroad a lot, so haven't assembled a system for decades - been managing on semi-portable all-in-one efforts which are pretty yuck.

Great memories of my first system (we lived on baked beans for months to be able to afford it): Leak amp and tuner, Garrard deck, Wharfedale speakers, followed by a system with AR Cambridge amp and various other bits but still the darling old Wharfedales. What would be the modern equivalent of that kind of set-up? My hearing has only deteriorated by 3% in all that time, so I still hate fan noise etc (mother could hear a boiled sweet being unwrapped from the next room - at 93!)

Priority is good sound and separation of instruments/voices for classical and opera with speakers that give the full breadth of sound without rocking the whole street and doing my ears in. Room is approx 4 metres x 3 metres x 3 metres high but will eventually be moved to one 5 m x 4 m x 4 m high. As mentioned before, good stereo yes please but no interest in surround sound and horses riding round the room.

I'm wondering if I should be posting to the hi-fi forum rather than home cinema, but I can't be the only person in the world who thinks in terms of home opera house rather than home cinema?

Many thanks for your quick response to my first ever message on a forum of this kind.

What will the main source be for your Opera? DVD/BluRay or CD? What about radio?

Your £800 is going to be spread fairly thin if it has to cover good speakers, amp, cd and tuner.

I would suggest investigating the Marantz M-CR603 'all-in-one' (£450). 60watts per channel, FM/DAB/internet radio, CD player, optical digital connection to your TV or DVD/Bluray player.

5 stars from WHF and a favourable review in last month's issue of Gramophone magazine by our own Andrew Everard (who apparently had great fun trying it with a pair of his PMC GB1 speakers that now cost £1500 brand new!)

That would leave you £350 for speakers whereas an £800 'seperates' set-up would only leave about £200 - £250 per component depending on how many sources you need.

If you could find another £100 then you could partner the M-CR603 with something like the KEF Q300s that are - by all accounts - an ideal match.

I should qualify my suggestion by saying I only have feedback from other owners and reviewers to go on (hence a suggestion rather than a recommendation).

(Also I am buying the M-CR603 in two weeks time so have been researching people's thoughts about it.)

There is also the Arcam Solo-Mini (that can be found in Richer Sounds for £549 now.) However that is only 25watts per channel and lacks ethernet/internet radio and lacks a digital optical input. (The best way of connecting your new TV or BluRayDVD).

Many thanks for this. I could raise a bit more money if the result would be markedly better - one way would be to leave buying the speakers for a while and use those we already have. Main source of opera would be DVD but for £800 plus speakers on top I would want a good all-round audio system, giving good results for radio and CD also. I hope you will post your experience with the Marantz when you get it. I hope it will be all that you hope for.
