HI there

Yes I'm the guy who got one of these 9664's in Holland and am extremely imporessed with it. For me the only TV that does a better allround job is the Kuro (duh) but not all living rooms are fit for 50 inches of plasma tech not to mention as a student i move a lot so the transportation of the device is an issue for me, not to mention whether or not my next place in a years time will have enough space for it. With that said for me this set blows every other TV out of the water. Only thing that comes close is the new Sony Z, but I can't afford to * around dealing with backlight bleed for months on end.

It seems to me that this seems to be a real UK problem, but I guess with Phillips being a Dutch company it is easier to get a hold of one in Holland, not to mention see every model on display at a store and then order from an online retailer (what I did). This is the site I ordered from... http://www.komplett.nl/k/ki.aspx?sku=490101 They have 16 units in stock again for under 1600 euros. Sounds like you Brits are getting scammed :p

Happy Hunting!

Slowly coming round the the 'fact' that the 9664 is the best 42' set to buy.

So, is the Ambilight thing any good? does it matter if the wall behid is not white?

AND

The gousting (typed that 4 times and still couldnt spell it!, or have I?) mentiond in the review, which the Sonys dont suffer from, how bad is it? Will it effect the viewing of Sport much (big footie fan)?

All motion systems seem to have judder or ghosting and everybody sees something different I think. We want to see the TV and report. The Sonys we looked at did look good (though the 100Hz Philips we DID see on Tuesday - the 9604 37inch with the 9664 type chassis was as good as I care about). I don't want to look for a problem though. 50 Hz CRTs judder a lot (I know, cus we are forced to watch one while we look for a new telly).

Local John Lewis (Sheffield) has the Philips in stock, but won't put it on display. They think people will hand over £1500 for a telly they don't know they sell, without seeing it???

The Ambilight is just a bonus to me, or something you can leave off. Our walls are currently orange, so don't know what it will look like (want to find out though!). Will redecorate a more neutral scheme however.

I am trying to see this TV and report (it is too hard). Don't watch much football but I do care about the quality of the Motion. The review said occasional didn't it? The Sony TVs are not perfect, they are very good indeed.

Im told they have one on display at Bluewater LJL. Cant make it there till next week!

Have just read the news section re new Philips sets due out in a month. Does this mean the Essence and 9664 are a stop gap? Is it normal for 3 top of range models to be released so close together????

any idea of pricing guys? (and Clare of course!)

A quick reply (for once) as I am made up with a cold..... The 9 7 LED series are coming out (9704). They look more silver (not as nice to my eyes). Think it is 40 and and 46 rather than 42 and 47 which is a little strange. Pricey I think (over £2000). Try Google image search - good links. Back to my bed (sniff).

Cough.....

I have a mad girlfriend - She has walked out of the house with a funny look on her face today, leaving me with my Lemsip. She thinks that I don't know, but I heard her on the phone squeezing Richer Sounds for the best price for a 42inch 9664 with a 5 year warranty. She knows how much it is in Lewis, now they do - and will undercut. The 47 is £1799 - is it as good as the 42 though? Have not seen a Z5500 (contemplated a Z4500).

I think the telly is all but ordered. Now, I must gargle some TCP.....

ear did you pick up on any gosting on the 664, as when i saw this set playing sky sports2 hd at 1 point it looked like there was 48 players on the pitch, or it could the shop had it set up wrong

Maybe with that many players England might be a better team, rather than needing dodgy penalty goals.....

if your big into your movies the 47inch would be better , more cinematic , many people regret not getting a bigger set after getting used to 37 , 40 inch , when watching movies with black bars the image is smaller again , i guess it depends on the size of your room also , but if it fits ??

Yes Darren - I do know I'm lucky (I remind myself every day).

I agree about the 'movies with borders' angle on a 37/40. For us though it was a case of realising a 46/47 would just be too big and too dominant in our intimate living room. We had a Panasonic 42 in there for a week and realised we simply didn't want the 46 we had come so close to buying (Sony WE5/Z4500).

TV viewing is more of an issue though. Modern broadcasting seems to have developed a totally stupid desire to film peoples faces at point blank range. As the common telly has got bigger, this habit has become ever more common and you are constantly having to see these massive faces (and their nasal hair, blackheads and shaving cuts) at a scale you don't need. If we all had portable tellies it would make sense. In the 70s and 80s it was normal (news, interviews, docu's, dramas - everything) to film the head and shoulders. Now we just have horrible close-ups and I really believe it is the one draw-back of a big TV. It can get frightening!

Looking forward to a certain delivery.....

Hi Darren. I'm afraid my report will be delayed. Just refused delivery of our 9664, as the box was open (totally cut open). City Link (need I say more?). Would anybody sign for a £1500 telly that has been pawed?

Very wound-up. This is the negative aspect of home delivery (the sods who deliver). How many times has your lovely new item been dropped or messed with?
