I've rang my retailer and visited many times to purchase the Panasonic 46PZ80B and Panasonic BD-55, and after a few lies and pathetic excuses they've said they might not have any in due to them being discontinued or out of stock. It looks like i'm going to have to buy off Amazon, i've bought countless dvds off them but whether tv's are in pristine/expected condition when they arrive i don't know. Could someone or a few if possible clarify that Amazon is a good retailer and i should buy with confidence? I heard Clare bought a tv for her dad off Amazon, is his a good un? Any help appreciated, i just don't want to waste my money and end up with a dilemma like the Sony clouding/backlight bleed fiasco.

Thanks, Rorschach.

Hi Rorschach

Buying off Amazon should be fine. I bought a TV from them for a member of the family for Christmas, ordered it on Dec 22nd and it arrived on the 23rd as promised in tip-top condiiton. Had it all set up on Christmas day, no problem.

And if you're after a Panasonic DMP-BD55 you'd better hurry, as it is being phased out and new models are on the way. I'm attending the Panasonic press launch next month, so should get more details then.

Who is 'your retailer'? He was right when he said that both the tv and the Blu-ray player have been discontinued. If Amazon is a lot cheaper than get them there, just don't expect any aftersales service as such if you have a problem. And whatever you do, make sure you pay for the tv (or at least part of it) with a credit card to give you more protection in the event of a problem

Yeah, heard about aload of lines being discontinued weeks ago, shame. I'm certain about Panasonic not sure about other manufacturers. Sound and vision in farnworth, allsorts of fibs like "yeah, there's a delivery coming next week full of PZ80'S" "there'll be a delivery on monday" and i rang up today and they said "no i doubt there will be any coming in, their discountinuing all the lines and there's no real point". That really made my day, another thing i'm worried about, on Amazon in every description of the PZ80B they're saying it only has 2 Hdmi's, so i'm clueless now, buy or don't buy? Just shoot me, ha.

That's odd. Just looked on Amazon and searched for TH46PZ80. Firstly, the picture shown is of the more expensive PZ85 model, well established trick that one as it does look better than the PZ80. But rather more worrying is that the spec below is from the PZ8 model, which is the 'supermarket' model with last year's Vreal processor, lower contrast etc. So in fact they are advertising 3 different tv's in total - bizarre!

Have to say as well, the price they are quoting with a one year guarantee is nothing to write home about either.

Selling. What do i do, buy off Amazon and pray that i get the 2008 model or buy from the likes of Dixons or whoever else. I desperately want this and i haven't got a clue who to buy from. I hate the recession.

Panasonic 46 PZ80B, about a grand, give and take a little. With if possible, 5 year warranty and if they don't offer that then at least a reasonably priced cover or insurance plan. Thanks for helping me.

Well i've never had any trouble buying from Amazon - just check you're buying direct from them (or recognised secondary supplier) and if you're really worried, get a pre-buy guarantee in email form (from customer services) that you can return it without cost to you if there's any problem

The thing is they've got this years apparent model name with this years Panasonic PZ85 photo and last years specification. I would love the Panny 46PZ80B, and they've all got different things for the same tv. Will i get the PZ85, the PZ80B or last years model? I've emailed customer services with no luck, yet.

Have you tried bargaining with Crampton & Moore. They are at £849 plus £50 delivery, although that price is only if you can make it to the shop in Sheffield (a stipulation made by Panasonic)?

I think i might buy from crampton and moore, only 53 quid for an extended warranty. Still nervous about buying though. I'll have to search more. Really annoyed that Amazon are so messy with their products, anyone else bought a 46PZ80 off there?

Well, yes, considering they're the biggest online retailer in the world!

I bought a Sony L40-W4500 and yes, it arrived in pristine condition. You're probably more likely to get an ex-demo or used item passed off as new from a store (not unknown with the Dixons Group in the past).

And you are, of course, covered by the 'distance selling' regulations, which basically means you can return anything bought by mail order with 7 days, without even having to give a reason!

There is no doubt that they are good at what they do, but in this case the OP can do better.

Also, you are right in pointing out the distance selling regulations as a plus point when buying online, but you would have to pay the shipping costs to return the tv to Amazon and with the weight and fragility of a 46" plasma that would not be cheap.

I would fill out the 12 month guarantee registration form that comes in the box and just before the 12 months is up, you normally receive a letter giving you the opportunity to extend the guarantee at a reasonable cost. Failing that, phone Panasonic tomorrow tomorrow and check how much their guarantees cost.

Thanks a lot, i'm thinking of buying from Crampton and Moore, they look like a good retailer. They also do the DMP - BD 55 at a pretty cheap price. Thanks alsina.

I bought my TV from Crampton and Moore a few years back and have no complaints on their service. On the other hand, I regularly buy from Amazon now instead of Play as Play's customer service seemed to be non-existent when there was a problem, whereas Amazon have always come back to me in a timely fashion and always resolved the issue to my satisfaction. Of course it was DVDs / CDs we're talking here rather than TVs, but generally if a company can get the little things right, they'll be good on the big things too.

have to say that incorrect listing is pretty appalling. There are many who would mis it, or see it and decide to just have faith in amazon to flog them the right set, but i wouldnt given that theyre off to such a bad start there.

I have bought many items from Amazon with no problems. Bought a Blu Ray player at Christmas arrived within 48 hrs in perfect condition. I was also looking at the 46PZ80B a few weeks ago, tried several retailers including Richer sounds who said they could price match the internet price I had found, their 5 year warranty is only 10% of purchase price. I did try my local panasonic shop, more expensive but with 5 year warranty.... but the warranty promo finished that evening.

The TV will come with a 12 month manufacturers warranty anyway, Panasonic should contact you within the 12 months to offer you an extension. Unless you have a van or large car you will need home delivery , so you are taking a chance no matter where you purchase from...... as for the image or description being wrong, if it says th-46pz80b that is what you will get.

If Amazon had the Panasonic I recently purchased for the same price or cheaper then I can honestly say I would have been happy to buy from them

And that is the point. In this case, the OP can buy cheaper from an actual shop, which also means he's likely to get better after-sales service should he need it.

Thanks very much, pilgrims. Got the telly and the Blu-Ray player, could i be very very rude and ask everyone to pray so that that delivery, installation and setup all go well? I know it's really rude but i might as well try.

Thanks, Rorschach.
