Hi guys

This may be a really dumb question as im such a newbie to this game.

Does the centre speaker have to have a speaker either side? My TV is in the corner of the room and probs wont have room for a speaker either side, the plan is to put the 4 speakers at each corner of the rectangular room. Cheers guys :).

Yes it does, if you don't have the front left and right you'll lose most of the soundtrack, it'll be REALLY odd.

It's actually better to run without a centre speaker and just the front left and right than what you're suggesting.

Have you considered a soundbar instead?

Yamaha rx-677 probably. I want them for predominantly dvd and TV, wont listen to much music. Just wonder how much of the surround sound effect i'll get with floorstanders?

Cheers for your help pal.

Unless you actually have surround speakers connected you won't get any of the effect, that's not what the front speakers are for.

The point I was trying to make was, if you have the front left and right speakers you can run without a centre channel speaker as you set the amp to use a "phantom" centre (it sends the centre channel to the front left and right along with their own channels) but none of that has any bearing on the "surround effect". That's entirely dependent on the additional surround speakers you put in place (and you need two of those as well, you can't get away with just one behind you).

Its suddenly occurred to me I wont have space either the side of the TV (where the centre will be) for the fronts. Dont want to wall mount so had planned to buy stands.

To make the most of the Dali Zensor 1 5.1 or anything similar, they really need to be placed 'left, right, centre and surround' your listening/viewing position, otherwise IMO you'd be probably wasting your money.

If you can't fit floorstanders or wall mount, can the tv be moved to a central position along one of the walls, to then accomodate the left/right speakers?

It's likely to require a complete revamp of your room, so it all depends on how much you are going to use and enjoy the system over what you have at the moment.

Seems like small satellites & sub is your only choice. If u cant get roughly correct speaker positioning then nothing will sound right. No pics to see yr problem but maybe kef eggs or simiar? Flat/thin speakers? Otherwise suggest you buy a new house or shed.

From yr first post - speakers in 4 corners would work with a centre below/above the tv. It would need careful setup and there maybe a limited sweet spot. Pics would help for better advice maybe.

I do have an image but I dont know how to attach it here. The image is a file rather than a link.

I have purchased a new house which I move into in the next few weeks.

Ok it seems the surround isnt going to be suitable. What would be better; a good sound bar (seem to have decent ones available for £800) or an amp and 2 floor standers? I often play on my xbox whilst listening to the radio so perhaps the floorstanders would be better for that though really this purchase is for watching football and DVD's.

Cheers for the help chaps.

Cheers pal I would love to be able to attach an image. Its is a rectangular room with the TV in the corner. Not yet sure if I can slide the TV more towards the middle of the room, I dont think so but will look when I move in. :)

I don't mean to be funny (this time) but if you don't have room either side of the TV for stands, where exactly are you intending to put floorstanding speakers?

Get yourself a decent soundbar/soundbase, if you can't set the speakers out in any kind of normal way, you may as well not bother.

Cheers buddy, looking to spend a wee bit more than that I reckon.

How about any of these 3?

Yamaha YSP-2500
Monitor Audio ASB-2
Phillips HTL9100

Any experience with any of those? Cheers pal.

Both to the left of the TV, more in the centre of the room.

Wow. That really would be strange. Below see a picture of the front of smallest of my four rooms. You can see a small black floorstanding loudspeaker on the extreme right, and if you look closely you can see the other front speaker at the extreme left. The centre speaker is immediately in front of the TV, and luckily the centre speaker us just low enough to not intrude on the TV's picture. This is in a room that is about only 11 feet square. If you can't arrange something similar in your new room, you would be better off with a soundbar. (I also have two more standmount speakers near the rear corners of the smallish room.)

I've never used her heard a soundbar, so I cannot help other than point you in the direction of good reviews. Your best bet is to go down to your local dealer, someone like Richer Sounds , and tell them what you want and your budget, and see if you can audition 2 or 3.
