Hello,

I need some advice on a wee speaker upgrade. I've got the Onkyo 22 HDX set up in the lounge after getting sick of having wires everywhere with my old system. The problem is I'd like to give it a bit more ommph and hopefully improve the dialogue with a centre speaker and the Okkyo centre speaker is only available with the two rear speakers as an upgrade bundle.

So I think I'll splash a bit more cash on a flash centre speaker, I was looking at these, MORDAUNT SHORT ALUMNI 5's. They can be had for £100 at RS.

Is this a good speaker and a good price? Would it suit my Onkyo?

Any advice or other suggestions would be very welcome. Oh, and it needs to be predominantly black.

Many thanks.

I'll be off to RS to buy the SHORT in about an hour, can anyone please tell me I'm doing the right thing, or suggest something different?

Cheers.

I'd strongly recommend you get it on a home trial basis i.e. they agree you can return it if it doesn't sound right. Finding a centre speaker from a different manufacturer to integrate with the two fronts is not an easy process. If you can't audition different speakers for the role, I'd strongly suggest going with the specific extra package made by Onkyo which will be built to integrate with the fronts.

Agreed. It's generally sensible to match at least the front three speakers of a home cinema set up -- i.e. use speakers from the same manufacturer and ideally the same range. You can perhaps be less fussy about the rears in this respect, but I wouldn't part with your cash unless you know the retailer is happy for you to return it if it doesn't match your other speakers tonally. Oomph is one thing, but sonic integration is also key if you aspire to create a seamless sound-field...
