Hi,

I do own a Sony BDP-S5500 Blu-ray player and intend to use it as a CD player as well when I do buy a stereo amplifier. What I don't quite like is the lack of a display on the BDP-S5500, but I am not willing to spend £200 on a CD player. Do you think it is worth to spend around £50 for a second hand CD player (like Philips CD 820 or Yamaha CDX-590) or would I be better off getting used to the lack of display on the Blu-ray player?

Many thanks.

Thaves,

your budget is only £50 nothing wrong with that so I would recommend getting one from the bay and comparing it to your blu ray player just had a look and there is a marantz cd 36 , Cambridge audio cd 32 and a Cambridge audio topaz cd10 just to name a few that have a few hours left but all within your budget atm. If it isn't as good as your blu ray player would be easy enough to make your money back on them,

My personal opinion is a dedicated CD player should outperform a blu Ray player.

Hi Thavess.

Forgive me if any of this is teaching you to suck eggs. The BD player you have not only lacks a display, it also lacks a Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC), so if you want to play music from it, you'll need to choose your amp carefully so it includes a DAC with a coaxial digital input (sometimes called S/PDIF[/b] (Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format)).[/b]

As you say, the player lacks a display and presumably this is because it has an on-screen one when you play CDs. If so, chances are when you power up the player, the TV switches on over the HDMI. One option is to just go with that and use the TV as your display which is power hungry and not ideal for most people.

If it was my dilemma, given how much you'd need to budget for a new amp with a DAC and speakers, I'd look to buy all three used and leave the BD and TV for video.

I had a topaz cd player. The transport is rough and noisy (sound is fine). Choose a different one.

Marantz cdp's are a good buy 2nd hand. CD67 and CD5001 are usually around the £50 mark are very nice sounding and as bullet proof as cd players can be.
I agree. I'd be looking for a well cared for example close to home that I could check before taking away.

Alternatively, an older DVD player, say from Denon, often go for peanuts and do have a time display.
