I'm buying a new cartridge and I have the following choices for an upgrade, nothing else, here they are:

Goldring GL2100
Goldring GL2200
Grado Prestige Blue
Grado Prestige Red
Ortofon 2M Red (that's what I'm going to buy otherwise)
Rega Bias 2

All opinions ASAP because I have 10 minutes!!!

JohnDuncan:Ortofon. Upgradable by stylus to Blue or Black status.

Good Good. Ortofon 2M Red it is! As for the stylus, when I upgrade to say Blue status, do I need to set the tracking weight for the 2M Red or the 2M Blue?

The suspense is killing me :)

Bagsy someone else goes through the whole re-alignment, re-balancing arm, tracking force, VTA, anti-skate kerfuffle.

I usually do my best with the TT set-up advice but it can be just a little like instructing someone how to do brain surgery via email.

edit: That cartridge that everyone recommends (the AT one) wasn't sold at the shop.

The Record Spot's Guide to Brain Surgery:-

1) Get hold of someone's head. Ideally, requiring brain surgery.
2) Knock them out
3) Open up head
4) Operate on the relevant bit (may need to decide this before the op, check with patient first, oops, this should be step 1, oh buggerit)
5) Patch up patient
6) Handshakes all round
7) Give patient some ibuprofen, turn out the lights, go to pub.

Hughes123:He's in Devon though, and I'm in North Oxfordshire!

Use the phone. (Remarkable device.)

He will take the order and send it to you through the post. (Excellent means of sending things to each other.)

* See above or ask your 'people'. They will know how this works.

I've read it!

Anyway, I've already bought my Ortofon, so there's no going back!

Well thanks for telling us! (I assume you mean the 2M Red?)

I infered it by saying "so, how do you fit this thing"!

Yeah, it's the 2M Red.

Thanks, but no, it was a doddle to fit! Far easier to fit than I thought (many say the 2Ms are easy to fit though!)

I tell you what though, this is one little excellent cartridge! I havn't fiddled with it too much yet, but the sound is already excellent! A lovely rich, deep sound, but the timing is still excellent and the soundstage is far better than my CD73T! I really am impressed with this, £60 very well spent! It'll get the best out of my old (and new) vinyl!

Now, all I need is a place to buy more vinyl!
