GF is moving over from Canada and has an Onkyo TX-NR809 but it uses 110v power and we 220v over here. I have a transformer, would it be safe to use one on an AVR so that it can run on 220v? Any advice appreciated
Sell it, buy something new here. Once you factor in hassle and faff factor, it is probably a break even trade. Additionally, and I'm guessing here, the size of accommodation you'll have here will be smaller than in Canada, so that might change the approach you would take to home cinema.

The Canadian mains is 60hz so even if you had a transformer it is possible that you would have problems with a 50hz supply over here. Best advice is sell it and buy new here.
