I’ve bought myself some new CA P100 cans, very nice. I knew they were worth looking at when What Hifi gave them only three stars. My other favourite cans, Audeze Sine, also got a mediocre review from WH. That said, they like my Sennheiser HD600s.
While fiddling around with them, I came to a realisation, which is that our hearing changes significantly with age. I am 61, and on average I should have lost many dB of sensivity to higher frequencies, and the drop increases with frequency. Well, the P100 comes with a graphic equaliser. Soooo … I created a GE preset with a slope that increases with frequency to account for age related hearing loss. And bingo, it has transformed the sound. I’ve contacted CA to get details of the GE settings as they do not have any scales, so it has to be done by ear, so to speak.
These cans are quite impressive. I’ve listened this evening to Sibelius, John Coltrane and Aphex Twin, and the sound is far better than expected. I bought them so that I could listen to French radio while out walking, and not have passing cars disrupt listening. The quality of reproduction of voices is important as I am not a native French speaker. I have a Bose QC25, but the cable is annoying, and the lower frequencies are a bit mushy and exaggerated. The P100 is a noticeable step up in sound and ergonomics. That said, I like the use of a standard AAA battery in the Bose.
