It's not really a problem, but more a nuisance.....which only started happening after I disconnected the receiver for a week, whilst on my holidays..

Before I disconnected it, I would switch the receiver and dvd recorder (freeview tuner) on to watch tv, and a blank screen would appear for a few seconds (with HDMI, 1080P displayed in the top left corner of the screen), before the tv channel would appear. No problems with that. (HDMI switching, I presume?)

But since reconnecting it after my holidays, it does the same, but then about 2/3minutes into viewing, the screen goes blank again for a few seconds, then starts again. Admittedly, it does not happen everytime, but overall it's most of the time.

Now it's only a nuisance because it disrupts the viewing, and has only started doing it after reconnection, as I have said......but I'm a bit worried about ever disconnecting the receiver again, cos it might start happening twice rather than once, and so on......

Does anyone else suffer from this problem......and is there any way to stop it? Or does the receiver have a fault?

Well, I've had 54 people look at this, with no reply, so I'm assuming noone else has had this happen.

Therefore any of the experts (Andrew, Clare etc) able to help me out?

HDMI handshake issue? First off, I'd check all cabling is firmly seated, and there's no sign of cable breaking/damage that could be causing the signal to drop out (and then have to re-establish the connection).

I can't lay claim to an AVR-2310 but I've had this same issue with my Harman Kardon AVR-255. I found that this was caused by the "meh" quality HDMI cable that I was using to connect the Australian version of a Sky HD+ box to my LCD. It would inexplicably cut out at random intervals. I tried swapping the cable for one of the better quality ones I had for my Blu Ray player and found that it was the cable causing the issue.

If you haven't tried a different cable (or try connecting the cable direct to the TV instead of via the receiver), I'd recommend that first.

Ok done a bit of investigation.....

Cable looks fine, and I have disconnected it and cleaned it, then plugged back in........but it still does the same drop out.

Next I borrowed my HDMI from the X Box, which has no issues at all. Plugged it in to find it does the same thing (drops out after a few minutes)........

Maybe change what HDMI input I'm using? (Currently HDMI 1 labelled on the back as the one for DVD)

Anything else I could try?

Ok, changed using the input to HDMI 4 from HDMI 1.............

And so far so good!!!!!!

Will keep an eye on it over the next few switch on's and see what happens...

But if this fixes the problem, should I be sending the unit back under warranty?

Before you do that, i'd check the Denon's firmware is up-to-date: if your Freeview DVD recorder has updated its own only firmware automatically (which many such products do, along with EPG updates), that could have caused a clash that kicked this all off? Outside chance, but worth a try.

How do you check what firmware you have? I have a problem where no sound is initially output from the tv when the amp is in standby mode when I watch Sky hd? Also, where and how do you apply the firmware update?

Thanks.

The firmware will be the original one when i bought it in September.(I think)

How would I check it's up to date, and if it's not, how would I update it?

I assume the DVD recorder updates automatically through the aerial, as I have not updated it?

Thanks......

I've a similar problem with my 1909. Midway through watch a dvd the HDMI loses lock, and the screen flashes black for 1/2 a second and sound goes. I put it down to the fact that my dvd player is fed with the free cable from my Freesat box. I'm waiting to swap it for a ThatCable lead once I buy my new Blu-Ray player (which will be connected by my Chord Active subscription cable, if it ever arrives).

Having suggested it, we've realised we can't recall how you check a Denon's firmware. So many receivers....

. We're checking this afternoon, and will post findings.

As for your recorder: as mentioned in one of my earlier posts, this typically happens automatically, along with EPG updates etc.

OK, here's the info. I'll also post this in a separate thread, in case anyone's just searching for Denon firmware advice.

1) Connect Ethernet cable

2) Go to Manual Set-up menu and choose Firmware Update option

3) Denon Product Management System will then advise if there is a later version of the firmware available (it doesn't specify a version number)

Denon informs us that the '10' model range of receivers should perform this check automatically when powered on, but obviously not every user will have their receivers hooked up to the Internet.

Having said all that, there haven't been any firmware updates for your AVR-2310 yet - though Denon says there are updates for the AVR-3310 upwards.

None of which, sadly, gets you nearer a fix right now for your issue, but at least you know....!

Pete I've only had mine for a couple of weeks or so. I re-assigned HDMI port one for Sky HD and port 2 for my PS3. At present that's all I use as I can't fit any kind of stand alone Blu Ray player in my TV stand
emotion-6.gif
I read I must use HDMI port one for Sky HD as some Sky boxes were having trouble linking with the 2310 (or vice versa) Apparently port 1 has better circuitry than the others if what I read was true. Just out of curiosity why were you originally using HDMI port 4? Do you have 4 HDMI devices connected?
emotion-7.gif
If your problem with the TV/Amp was a HDMI issue would it not make sense to use your "best" HDMI port 1? I'm more asking the question to anyone reading this than advising you as I'm pretty clueless myself to be honest! Is there really any difference between the HDMI ports anyone?

By the way do you switch yours off at the mains every night? Should it be switched off every night or just long periods such as holidays? Or doesn't it make the blindest bit of difference? My girlfriend insists on unplugging every electrical appliance every night without fail. I swear she's got some OCD's I might have to get her sectioned soon

Pistol Pete1:

Ok, changed using the input to HDMI 4 from HDMI 1.............

As mentioned earlier, I have changed from using HDMI 1 to HDMI 4. I think you read it the other way round.

So it's HDMI 1 that's the problem which will really be a problem were I to ever get sky HD!!!!

The problem disappears when I use HDMI 4. I have 3 devices in HDMI. I used 1, 2 and 3, but now use 2, 3 and 4. That's why I chose HDMI 4 to change to.

Clare - if no new firmware is available, then that is not the cure for this problem?

Is it a return now?

Also, you suggest using the ethernet connection to update firmware, but the machine does not have one!?!

Yes, as says, that's not going to be an instant cure for your problems. And apologies for generic ethernet-centric nature of firmware post: straight from Denon in response to a query to them about firmware issues on the entire AVR-'10 range....That's gonna mean referring back to dealer for upgrades (which it sounds like you should anyway re HDMI-socket issue).

Ok, I'll email the shop i bought it from and see what they say. I bought it with a 2 yr warranty, and I think i'm right in saying they do a lot of 'in house' repairs there anyway.

Thanks for your help.....

Why do you think it's the Denon? I don't know if this helps, but both I and a friend have had minor freeview problems since the major freeview retune on September 30th. He has a Humax freeview PVR, and I have a Panasonic 46G10 plasma with freeview built in. The trouble in both our cases was similar to yours - switch on telly, 2 minutes later the screen (for me) went blank, (for him) switched to another channel.
It turned out to be a conflict between signals coming from different transmitters - we both just deleted all the channels from our freeview lists that we didn't watch, and the problem was solved. Two weeks later, there was another freeview update, and we've both again had to delete unused/conflicting channels. The following advice is on the freeview site:
"...your home may be in an area which receives reception from more than one transmitter. In this case we recommend you do a manual retune.". It's not exactly the same as your issue, but it is similar. It might be worth a try with your freeview tuner.

ok the latest......

It now does the same on HDMI 4.......so clearly it's not HDMI 1, and I suspect that it's not the complete HDMI board, cos the blank screen problem never happens with the blu ray player or x box, which are both connected through HDMI.

I have now connected the DVD recorder directly to the tv, thinking it could be a problem with the recorder's freeview tuner, but it seems to behave.

Now I'm wondering whether the Harmony 525 is sending an extra command to cause this problem.....so I have been switching it all on, as usual, and then before the second blank screen appears, facing the remote well away from the whole system.

So far so good.....will continue and see if it keeps behaving....

If this does not cure the problem, I'll try the idea given by wireman above, and delete all channels not needed on the freeview tuner.

Thanks....

ok,

I've now deleted all unused freeview programmes off the dvd recorder menu, and so far (fingers crossed) the problem has not re occured.

I'll report some more after some more use....but if this works, i hope it will be useful information for anyone else with this problem, whatever system they may have......
