Hello,

Just bought myself a new Rega RP8 with Apheta 2 cartridge.

But unfortunately it doesn't sound at all as good as I would like it to be.

Is there some burning in time needed? I am really curious because it should be a great deck.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Regards Sjors

Can we take it you didn't audition this before you bought it?

A common problem unfortunately, what is the rest of your system?

For this level of cost and performance you need to contact your Rega dealer immediately to tell him your concerns.

Yes, you can expect a short period of 'running in' for the cartridge but it should still sound pretty good even straight 'out-of-the-box'.

You need to get that dealer engaged to check your set-up as soon as possible before [potentially] any damage is done.

Thanks for your reply chebby.

Will listen a little bit more and if it's still not satisfying I will contact Rega.

Chebby is right. Did the turntable come pre-setup or did you do it yourself?

A cartridge may take a little time to 'free up', the term burn-in is pretty meaningless here, but this combination should sound very good when set-up correctly with your system. Perhaps it needs checking out.

The only characteristic some cartridges have when new is sounding a bit tight or thin. Ironically if you're in the U.K. the recent warm weather means it should sound at its best.

A properly set up new turntable should sound amazing. Have you made any schoolboy errors connecting it up? What actually sounds 'wrong'? Any distortion - stop using immediately!

Agree with previous remarks.

Is not this all "Rega" stuff overrated ? Bad speakers reviews, common problems with turntables, only their amps get good reviews. True?

I can't comment on their speakers, but are problems with their turntables more common than with other manufacturers in the low-to-mid-price range? Possibly there are more complaints because they sell a lot more turntables at that price range than most manufacturers. There must be only them and Pro-ject in it. Oh yeh, and Crossley.

I can only say that my Rega sounds amazing for £500, far more than twice as good than my previous turntable that cost half the price. The amp is pretty good too.

Ok. I wonder how the amp sounds. On my list...

So you bought a £2300 turntable and cartridge set-up you had never heard and now you're disappointed with the sound. Would you buy a car you hadn't at least test driven? Foolish. If you're based in the UK, you should find the distance-selling regulations entitle you to a cooling-off period where you can return an item you don't want or which doesn't meet your expectations, providing you return it in boxed new condition. But consider this a lesson.

do you have the right phono amp for the cartridge?

or the right setting (MC) on your phono stage?

That's just the point. He has a Leema Essentials phono amp which should be fine but it has very limited settings, basically it's either MM or MC I am led to believe, and that's it apart from a Flat and Cut option.
