Brio R with RX6 not a good match?

Hi Guys, Since a year now, I own a Brio R with Rega dac and MA RX6. The previous set-up was Brio R with MF v-Dac and Wharfedale 9.1. Back then the system was very nice and warm sounding. Only thing I felt it lacked was that bit of the lower end. So, I started looking for (compact) floorstanders. After auditioning B&W 683/684, Elac, Focal, Dali MA RX8 and RX6 I went for the RX6 because I felt they had the perfect balance between bass and treble. However, I am not really happy now that I have it at home. I don't know the right word but it's just not nice to listen to. It's very detailed and fast, but no warmth at all. Best word to discribe it would be harsh. I gets worse the more I increase the volume. I can only blame the RX6 because it wasn't a problem with the 9.1. It also applies to both Spotify premium and Vinyl, so that rules out the source. I just read some fora about the Brio and find some recommendations for partnerring them with the RX6. So I don't understand what could be wrong. I was thinking of maybe changing cables but I doubt that is worth it. Any thoughts?

Nowt wrong mate per se. Its just that you dont like that pairing ,end of. Lesson learnt , assuming I have got the drift of your 'dem' efforts correctly ?.

You will no doubt get 'I have that set up and its fine, not harsh at all '. Well they dont have your room or ears do they.

Next time dem at home.

Mucking around with cables is the road to ruin.

I took some Neat Motive 3 home, sounded rubbish with my Brio R but sounded so good in the shop demo room!

Lesson learnt........

Took some RS1 home - hifi nirvana resumed!

Have you run them in for over 70 hours? Is your room a lot different from the demo room. If you don't like them then contact the shop and explain situation and see if you can trade them in for something else, they may swop them for an demo pair. How about the Rega speakers hear they are good.

Hi Mike

that is quite normal, there are differences between the shop demo room and your space, there are already good advices on the thread, like the burning in time, i don't know your cables, are they pure cooper or they have a mix of silver? Try some pure cooper cables, the MA RX6 have a metal dome twiter and with a reaviling amp like the Brio R is they tend to sound a bit bright, and if you add to this mix a silver cable even worst.

I know this from personal experience, i own MA RS1, MA B4 (and i have a cooper cable with a tin bath) and compared with my Dynaudios they are not so warm even with a cooper cable.

The RX6 are a magnificent set of speakers there is no problem if they are not for you, the same thing go to the Brio R.

It is my opinion as well if all this fail you shoul try some Rega RS3 or 5.

Try first some cheap 100% pure cooper cables, and start from there.

Tell us about your findings.

Bright detailed and forward can sound exciting over a short dem....living with them is another matter.

Copper cables are certainly worth a shot if you have silver coated ones.

Hi,

Thanks for your great help, much appreciated.

To answer some questions;

- Yes, I only demo'd in the shop. Did use my own amp. The room is definately different from mine. Mainly the distance is shorter from the listening position, approx 3,5m in my room vs 6 in the demo room

- I guess it should be burned in by now. I listen almost daily for about a year now.

- I did change my currect cables (don't know silver or copper) with pure copper. No noticable effect.

- I guess going back to the shop and explaining the situation is the best way to go. Although I'm not sure if they will take back anything after a year. Wouldn't mind some ex-demo btw.

Cheers

Sorry missed that part. Well after a year you probably won't be able to change them unless you can do a swop with some ex-demo ones. Best bet is to try a home demo if you can.

In that case...

Sell your MA RX6, you should get nice money from them, and start looking for a new set of speakers, demo some Rega RS3 and 5, Epos Epic 5 this are speakers that I demo myself with the Rega Brio R and found them very warm.

Good luck on the RX6 sale! 😉

How odd! I know there is a slight difference but my rs6's sound a little boomy on some music with my brio r, fed by an rdac. I blame the damn rdac.

I have the Brio R with RX6 and Audiolab CD player, works for me fine and by the way I have copper cables.
But obviously even the same system in another room and with different ears it my not suit everyone.
I think of them as detailed but some may say bright.

Anybody advice on "warm"speakers? Preferably (compact)floorstanders, otherwise stand mounts are ok as well. I noted the epos epic 5 and don't like the look of the rega rs3/5 due to the side woofer.

Thanks again!

If you go the standmount route...Dynaudios. I have auditioned with dm6's and they were very sweet souding. detailed yet warm, and sweet treble. I am soon to demo with my own dm7's, and I expect buy the brio r. My doubts with dynaudios and the rega is whether the speakers will be driven properly....they did sound v good tho. It is a question i will ask the dealer when i go in, as you can't ask rega direct.

Hi-Fi Outlaw has Dyn. Excites, it would be good to hear how he is finding them now after a little time running in with the mentioned amp.

I was after some floorstanders for a long time, thinking that is what i needed for bass weight, until i recently heard my brothers BX2's and was amazed at the sound quality and bass depth of modern medium priced standmounts, and immediately changed tack and bought some nice standmounts that can actually fit in my small room. 🙂

No offense, but the MA RX6 are horrible sounding for the money. The Brio-R is amazing, so I would try to change the speakers if you can. Epos Epic 5 are much better sounding than the RX6 for similar price, even though Whathifi gave them a descerning 4 star rating. Don't believe in 5 star ratings, the PSB T6s and KEF Q700s are also better sounding than the RX6. My Klipsch's are too.

I have a Brio-R and I think it sounds great with my Tannoy Revolution Signature DC4Ts - used to be available from Richers, but now I think only in clearance/ex-demo. I paid £600 for the Tannoys, you may be able to get a better deal.

I've never done any serious demo-ing but someone here referred to the Brio sound as 'grippy' which I think is spot on. I think it tends towards warm sounding too. Anyway, I absolutely love this combo and the Tannoys are certainly compact and gorgeous to look at. Much better than the MA BX5s or BX6s (sorry I can't recall which) when I had a speaker demo at Richers last year. I found the bass quite flabby, and overall less detail than the Tannoys.

My room is small, just 4m x 4m

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks again.

I was also looking at the dyn's in Hi-Fi Outlaw's signature. Was a bit hesitant because of the 4 ohm thing. I guess I just need to find out and have a listen.

Mike

There are some very negative comments here regardng the RX6 which I hope will not put potential purchasers off from giving them a demo.
In my own opinion they are great speakers, detailed and with a good clean bass response.

Hi,

I agree with Coll, I think that the RX6 is a fantastic speaker. I am currently demoing a new phono stage at home and some of my lp's sound absolutely wonderful through them.

The only thing I would say is that they re not warm sounding speakers and IMO cannot be made to sound that way by changing amps, cables etc. As an experiment I swapped out my Naim pre/power amp with an old Sugden integrated I had in the loft (long story). This amp is known to be a very warm sounding piece of kit. Only it wasn't through the MA's, in fact it was pretty similar to the Naim pre / power, only the bass wasn't as tight and well defined

So I think that the OP really needs to look at other speaker options if a warmer sound is what he prefers.

HTH

Hi

i've been busy with my new toy... After you can look at some photos in "your System" forum !

My system is a very revealing one, the Dyns X12 are fantastic, very detailed, open, with tight and fast bass.

Very different from Monitor Audio timbre ( At least the ones I know) and i've demo the RX6 but with a NAD 326BEE and loved the combo ( almost bought that combo).

But I can not describe the Dyns X12 as "warm" in MY opinion they aren't.

This week i've been to my Rega dealer and he had connected to the Brio R a pair of XTZ 99,26 and compared to my Dyns X12 They sounded "warmer".

Go and demo for your self, take with you the Brio R and your cables, or if possible demo in your home.

The only thing that i can say is that Rega Brio R/ Dynaudio Excite X12 works for me, and some time me and my wife we have long sessions, like 8/9 hours, and we never have listening fatigue.

Pairing a 50 wpc amp with a 3 way floorstander would not be something I'd be looking to do.

A change of amp or speakers may be appropriate. But if you can I'd demo at home as your own listening environment is probably the most important part of your set up. Regis own speakers would be my first stop, RS1s.
