Hi, Im considering rear speakers and I need some advice please. I will only be able to position the surround speakers at the rear of the room i.e not on side walls or on the side with stands but they can be anywhere behind the sofa, to the left and right.

I already have BR5s and a BRLCR for the front. What rears should I go for bearing in mind I dont want them wall mounted and what stands could you recommend? I reckon the BR1s as they are the same size cabinet(width) same size woofer and tweeter cones as the BR5s, the BR2s are bigger and the BRFXs are wall mounted and ideally for side usage.

Many thanks

Matt

Hmmm... bit of a difficult one. I'd still go for the BRFX simply because they are dipole/bipole and will fill the back of the room with sound creating a more natural surround effect. The BR1s would be the next choice but you would have to be careful about how close they got to the wall cos of the rear ports, plus the sound would have more directionality to where they are pointing, so it may take a bit of positioning before it sounds right.

Thanks for the reply. Where would be the best place to position the BRFXs for my situation and I presume they would need to be in bipole mode?

Allegedly with surround speakers, they need to be at about 6ft, which is where I have mine, which are switched to bi-pole

I've just bought 2 pairs of BRFX for surround and rears. My dilema now is which stands to put them on? My wife isn't keen on cables up the wall if the speakers are wall-mounted so I'll have to use stands. I Don't need any that protrude too much as the BR-FX's are only 130mm deep. Any thoughts?

Some small shelves? To be honest, stability will be an issue if you are sticking these speakers on stands, and i can't think of any stands that would match the footprint left by these speakers. I have just had a quick look on hifibitz and all the speaker stands look like they will take up quite a bit of floor space. If I was doing it properly i would use a small angle grinder to dig a channel in the wall to run the speaker wire along and cover with a poly filla. Alternativley there are plenty of cable tidy products out there for cables on walls which you can paint with the same stuff on your walls.

I don't think the BRFX's were ever intended to sit on stands and I personally think hanging them on the wall is the only way they should be.

They have a very small base and could prove to be very unstable (unless you glue them to the stands).

Some neat shelves could be an alternative but they don't hide the cables either and they still require wall fixing.

I've hidden the cables inside the plasterboard wall and repainted afterwards. Quite a messy job but definitely worth the effort.

Thanks for that. Having wallpaper isn't going to help here!, May need an entire room re-decoration.

Maybe I should switch them for BR2's before they get shipped out tomorrow? They are the same price.

After a quick chat with the missus we decided to go with BR2's instead and have changed my order. they may give me more flexibility in the future anyway. Thanks for the advice.
