thanks for all the help over on my other thread. . Now the proud owner of the Pioneer, and I have to say that I'm gobsmacked. Of course, I'd seen it in the shop, but that's no substitute for setting it up, darkening the blinds and putting on a DVD. Just breathtaking. Next question though: on my first day / weeks of ownership, what do I need to do to optimise / safe guard. I have read around and seen the following principles: dim screen for first 100 hours, use thx guide on jarre in China. Any specific guidance with this TV much appreciate. E.g. if dimming is a good idea, do I turn down brightness? contrast? Also, is the THX guide useless until you're 100 hours in because you're going to have the settings artifically dark to prevent burn in? Any noobie tips much appreciated! (or link to a decent thread on this particular topic - I hunted but couldn't find one just right)

bought the swivel stand to go with it for £50 which is a bargain as it retailed for £240

Hi mate,

Image retention etc just doesn't happen on this set so need to worry there, however this set to get the best out of it requires a bit of tweaking.

Check out the Plasma section on the A-V-forums site, there is a thread called "8G owners thread", on the first page of that thread there are bunch of recommended settings.

and just to add to the hints already provided, go to page 1 for the settings. Mine is now over the 'run' in period of 200 hours and a happy bunny ! The early days were a bit scary after coming from LCD. Don't worry about lowering contrast etc to prevent screen burn, use the settings on page 1, straight out of the box. No screen burn at all. Enjoy !

Can I ask about a potential fault on my unit?

There's a pretty loud buzz that comes from near the power unit. It's audible from at least 5 metres away, and goes when put into standby.

Does anyone else have this? For me, it's a shame to have paid so much for a tv that makes this buzz, although I'd feel better if I new that other people's did it too.

Looking forward to hearing a few different people's opinions

Mines absolutely silent but others have reported the "plasma buzz" syndrome. Normally dies down after a couple of weeks though and should really only happen when the screen is showing mainly white.

check with the retailer if they'll do a swap out if they've got any left.

did you sort the settings out?

Mine's about 4 weeks old but it's fine so far - maybe about 100 or so hours viewing time so still a little more to go before it's 'run-in'. There is an electrical hum evident if you are sat close during a quiet transmission but I imagine that to be normal. It does get quite warm but not overly so.

Overall I'm really pleased with the set and pleasantly surprised just how good the picture quality is on freeview when so many sets are very dissapointing, especially at this screen size. Glad I bought one as it's now discontinued.
