Hi there, its my first step into home theater and im looking for a small stylish 5.1 speaker package to go with my new Denon avr-1911 amp thats as good with movies as it is with music, does anyone here have any experiance with Bose Acoustimass 6 or any idea something suited to my needs? As good as the boston acoustics soundware xs maybe for there price i dont like them they look plasticy cheap in my opinion .. No bose bashers please..

Thanks they seem ok but there getting on a bit 5 years old , does any know if there decent with music?

It all depends on how much you want to spend.

You can find great (style) speaker packages from B&W, Monitor Audio, Klipsch, Wharfedale, ... that will blow the Bose speakers away with movies and music.

Up to £800, those speakers brands that you mentioned dont make anything anywere near as stylish or discrete in a 5.1 speaker package as bose do.. With a small sacrifice in sound quality i would prefer not to have a small lounge full of in your face speakers.

It's a pretty big sacrifice, about 350hz of the frequency range is lost between the sub and satellites and there is a big roll-off once you get to 15000hz. For movies it might not be very noticable, but for music listening I would stay away from them.

Maybe a Mirage speakersystem is the path in between? I heard them a while ago and they are pretty good with movies and music.
Have you considered in-wall speakers?

I could live with that.. I dont want to be sat in a bass bin after all. The walls in my house arent deep enough to take in wall speakers im afraid and im not keen on the look of that mirage set they have a similar cheap plain plasticy look about them like the bostons do. Im going to give the m-cubes an audition before i decide..

BB, would you consider the Mission M cube an upgrade to the Bose Acoustimass 15 system ?

Have a look at the new Cambridge audio minx 325 or one of their other new minx ranges.

you said no bose bashers please...........

but so many better speakers for the money like all the abovew have mentioned

Cambridge audio dont do nothing for me im afraid(richer sounds cast offs!).. I see them as like a poor mans naim! The missions will be better im sure.

Dan69:Not for the same size and money..

Minx 215 are £499 (Single cube I know) / minx 225 are £699, don't get me wrong not saying the bose are bad ( I have an ACM3 in my conservatory) just thought I would offer you an alternative to listen to.

I always liked the look of the mission m-cubes and came close to getting some myself, I was put off a little with the sound field when I auditioned them about 5 years ago, and went for bose myself at the time. Their sound was a little to diffused for me, a bi-product of the nxt panel they use.

I would suggest you audition all the options on your list if possibe and see which your prefer as speaker selection is based on personal taste

What about 4x monitor audio R45HD, and a R180HD centre, all £540 (should get some discount from a dealer, Audio T would give you at least 10%) then look for a R360HD sub or MA vector sub, should be able to pick something up for under £200. IMO that would sound better.

That would be a class small theater system but its just outta my budget at the mo mate and a shame as iv just just snapped this last minute bargin up before the vat increase!

I can't comment on the Acoustimass system. I had auditioned the Bose V20 system and was disappointed by its rubbish mid range. The Mission M cube offered a better value for money.

well i have the am10 with yamaha amp and denon dvd and the music playback is excellent far better than anything i have heard even B&W, kef and mission . plus i have ran a turntable into my home cinema system and the bose do a wonderful job of bringing 45s and lps back to life so if you cant afford to go to the am10 then i would say the am6 would be ideal but one thing the brackets are seperate but dont let that put you off cause once you start listening to these little boxes it will shame the rest of them.
