So that is your thoughts on Half of the disc.

What was the sound track like?

Dolby true or DTS MA. 5.1 or 7.1?

the picture is only half of the story in my views.

IMHO, the Dr No BD's PQ is not a great advance compared to the Ultimate Edition (remastered) DVD version, although I did notice an improvement in sound when I bought a 1/2-decent BDP. Incidentally, the Dr No BD & DVD are sourced from the same master tape - significant?

Not that impressed by the BD of No Country for Old Men, either.

However, have noticed BIG differences in the BDs of the Matrix trio, Pirates (especially the 1st), Kingdom of Heaven & Blade Runner, to name but a few.

Another good review site here.

Three poor-quality (sound and vision) BDs that stick in my mind are Silence of the Lambs, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

I have seriously not had any yet, must be my blu ray player

not poor PQ, but nothing better than the DVD when upscaled

"First Blood" (Stallone)

"Ghost Ship" (the Dark Castle remake)

Not even a Blu-ray player as mighty as yours can put right a poor transfer...

Heard gladiator was really bad.

Was going to buy, but so many reviews saying they could not tell the difference between dvd and blu-ray.

Whats your thought on that ?

That those reviews are written by hysterics without a decent home cinema system

The Gladiator Blu-ray, although not perfect, both looks - but especially sounds - better than the DVD.

The original Harry Potter was pretty dire IMHO. I have the rest but have never watched them though....

Gladiator looks great on blu-ray, certainly better than the DVD I previously had (or upscaling the DVD on my Blu-Ray)

most of the criticism seemed to relate to excessive DNR (digital noise reduction) applied during the conversion, which some screenshots claimed removed the arrows during the first big battle, this is not evident when watched in the real world

Watched it again on DVD the other day, and don't feel the need to upgrade, although TBF not watched it in Blu

Gladiator is better on Blu

Worst Blu disc so far for me has been Highlander, the PQ was ok but the DTS- MA was awful !!!!!

Good one Clare,

I like Gladiator too.

Watched "Half Blood Prince" last night and thought the PQ was decidedly underwhelming ( a bit like the film itself). Mind you, I was never particularly impressed by the picture quality of the previous ones I saw at the cinema.

If you have the Half Blood Prince BD/digital/DVD combo version, are you sure that you didn't watch the DVD version - as I did, d'oh! - by mistake?

IMHO, the BD looks lush - great detail, rich colours, faces look very 3D, with great contrast in the cave scene etc.

Master & Commander is not realy that good picturewise, but good for sound. I guage a blu ray as to whether I would use it to demo Blu Ray to people who haven't seen full HD yet.

Those I would demo with are

Ice Age

Wall-E

Hancock

Milk

Always been impressed with the DVD of Kung Fu Panda when watching it with the kids. So when I saw the BD version cheap, decided to buy it for Xmas. Of course, my other half couldn't understand buying it again. I tried explaining that the picture would be cleaner and brighter. Watched it today and I'm now questioning the purchase aswell. Could barely see any difference. Going to watch it again tomorrow with the DVD version playing in my HD DVD player so I can switch viewing from one to the other to see how much of a difference there is.

Got plenty of BD's and HD DVD's that are simply jaw dropping to watch but also a handful that are pretty dreadful to say the least.

heat..

I just bought Heat on Blu Ray last week and really enjoyed it. Thought the pic quality was very good.

maxflinn:

full metal jacket..

Totally agree here. Its very grainy. Although I wonder if its supposed to be like that?

I personally was very disappointed by the Blu Ray box set of Godfather. Couldnt really notice any difference in PQ between that and the standard Blu Ray.

just a note on blu rays that dont seem to be better than the dvd version.this could be the case on a 32-42 inch screen but may not be the case on a projector.from what i read this is when bluray shines so it may be worth making a note on what its being compared on.

i also bought heat , as its one of my favourite movies , i dont think it looks bad , just not great , for a bluray , right now im watching "aviator" on dvd , and the picture is excellent , nearly as good as heat imo , whereas dances with wolves looks much better on bluray than dvd for me ...

Watch mine on a 50" Panny plasma. I'm guessing less than 5% of people watch BD's and DVD's on a projector.
